I need help diagnosing 1987 chevy

I'd suggest a visit to the reference library on this site, pull up the 1987 emissions and drivability manual, find the chart for "cranks but doesn't start," and see what you figure out.

    Filled both tanks - BRUTAL

40gal tank on the suburban, usually never let it get lower than a 30gal fill up to take it easy on the fuel pump (TBI). here in Kansas City right now gas is about $3.10 regular to $3.50 premium. so it is about $100, give or take, to fillerup depending on which flavor.

FOR SALE: Retrosound Radio for 89-91...SOLD

if I stil had the OEM radio in my 1990, I'd be all over this at that price point. but some PO added a single Din radio that already has Bluetooth, etc (no dash cutting on a 90). it meets my needs. although it doesnt have the OEM appearance. unfortunately, the 1.5din market is limited to just a...

TBI 350 barely runs after tbi rebuild

also check out the throttle blade shaft for play. the cap should punch out easy with a small screw driver and a light tap from a hammer.

TBI 350 barely runs after tbi rebuild

I am guessing the throttle blade shaft bushings are worn or the shaft bent that is allowing the blades to close all the way, when the throttle stop screw should prevent the engine from dying with IAC closed off and unplugged

TBI 350 barely runs after tbi rebuild

probably not the issue, but I think 10sec may be a touch short to fully seat the IAC. you may try resetting it to full close for 30 sec and see if that makes a difference. the ECM doesn't actually know where the IAC is, just where it is commanding it to be assuming it knows where it is.

TBI 350 barely runs after tbi rebuild

sounds like that may be the issue...if it closes too quick and gets stuck, the IAC may not be able to open fast enough to catch it or closes too much because it is expecting more air past the throttle blades. I'd pop that plug and turn the screw a 1/4 turn clockwise. see if that helps it not...

'88 GMC R3500 DUALLY W/350 TBI and idle closed loop problems.

14 is a low vac reading.... it does not align with MAP reading of 30kpa you mentioned earlier (after subtracting MAP from atmospheric to convert to gauge pressure) that would be in the 19-20in range. I've always checked vacuum on the EGR port that the EGR solenoid connects to. checking the MAP...

    Headlights go on and off

a way to test that would be to unplug 1 light and reduce load and see if the light stays on. if so, adding relays to reduce load or replacing the switch would be the solution...or both

TBI 350 barely runs after tbi rebuild

have you ever reconnected rhe IAC harness? the original post never says you reconnected it. if it is disconnected, you are choking the air down and that is why it is stalling. also, if you can manipulate the throttle more "closed" past the resting position, maybe check the throttle blade shaft...

TBI backfire and dies at idle

yes. warm up engine with it plugged in. unplug it. set timing. turn off truck. then plug it back in.

TBI 350 barely runs after tbi rebuild

if the IAC is unplugged with it closed, the throttle cannot be forced closed completely or the engine will die bc it has no air. with IAC closed, set the throttle screw to be about 100rpm less than target (see GM manual of running a stock computer) at warm idle. then turn off truck and plug in...

    700r4 problems

fluid is always high when it isn't running bc it all drains out of the converter and sits in the pan

TBI 350 barely runs after tbi rebuild

iac can't really be "cleaned" except foe just the pintle. if you squirted stuff inside it, it could be getting lazy.

    700r4 problems

fluid level that high with engine running?
  16. G

TBI backfire and dies at idle

yes, tan and black. a single connector coming out of the harness by the brake booster

TBI backfire and dies at idle

timing will be way off the tab of the EST wire is plugged in. unplug the EST and timing should be near 0

Driver switch not working on passenger window.

maybe somebody has added relays or something to the system? extra trouble shooting steps in that case, I reckon.

    700r4 problems

could be filling up the transfer case. pull the fill plug on the transfer case and if fluid pukes out, that's where it is going.

    Headlights go on and off

the common thing is the headlight switch....
  21. G

    Headlights go on and off

actually the only "old" part is the switch. with integral circuit breaker. I'd consider replacing it to see if that is it. or add relays to reduce load on the switch and see if that helps. do the highs and lows both do it?
  22. G

    Headlights go on and off

you are right, integral to the switch it appears. it could be it is going bad or it is loading up with too much current from another issue in the wiring?
  23. G

    Headlights go on and off

is there a circuit breaker on the headlights? I thought the only circuit breaker was for power windows?
  24. G

    Headlights go on and off

does it do it if you give it some juice to up RPM? that may help determine if it is the alternator. does anything else cut out? does wiggling the switch do anything? did you add relays to the system? maybe the switch is getting hot and it is on its way out?
