    I'd say that's unlikely the timing chain jumped. did you pull the distributor before? I can't remember. if you did, you needed to restick it just how you found it when you pulled it or you needed to find top dead center on No 1 and stick it with the rotor pointed at No 1.

    you can check stored codes by jumping A and B on the ALDL port and turning key to on. it will flash 12 three times and then flash stored codes (up to like 30 starts ago). I'd also check the fuel pressure. the data stream from ALDLDroid or a scanner will help diagnose more.

    pretty sure there is an ignition diagnostic chart for all these parts in the drivability and emissions manual. I'd start with the crank-no start and it may lead you to the ignition diagnostics.

    I'd be looking over the connectors and wires from the ICM down to the main harness really well before I bought a new distributor. any ICM that is correct for your make/model/year/engine should work

    Got a code42 from ALDL on 87 Chevy 350

    code 42 is EST. electronic spark timing. it's a single black and tan wire coming out of the harness by the brake booster. it's also visible coming from the Ignition Control Module into the main harness at the distributor.

    I'm gonna roll the dice and replace the TCC solenoid. seems easy enough and will cost less than just a diagnostic fee at a transmission shop. also, based on the symptoms the solenoid seems like a very likely culprit.

    if you replaced the EGR with the wrong part (or maybe if it is stuck partially open), it will hesitate just off idle. not sure where you are with the parts gun, but unhooking the EGR vac line that goes to the solenoid and plugging it will quickly let you know if that is the issue.
