    Paint name & code

I believe you are correct. I'm saying that sample truck is about a '78; looking in the generic info packet: www.gm.com/content/dam/company/no_search/heritage-archive-docs/vehicle-information-kits/chevrolet-trucks/1978-Chevrolet-Truck.pdf It shows 23U as "Hawaiian Blue" and 20L as "Lite...

    4 speed saginaw for 60$

Yes - you would gain one gear. (!) Plus the "fun factor". I'd do it. The Saginaw is a sweet little trans. You'd have to do something for a shifter, assuming you are now column shifted. Hurst makes a number of (what used to be) inexpensive floor stick shifts. There are a bunch of different...

Thank you. I painted my Farmall in the garage and that was 30 years ago and four houses ago and I'm still finding stuff with red overspray on it. K

Doubling back to these pictures: did you paint it right there, where it sits? How did you manage all the red overspray? K

    Craziest antitheft idea yet.

My house is configured such that the front attached garage is under the second floor master bedroom. It is finished out nicely, clean and dry, so I usually keep the GTO in one spot next to my wife's daily driver. I was visiting with a friend and we were discussing our various man cave...

Have i decoded this VIN correctly????

Ok - here's my story: When I was a development engineer at the DPG I worked for a ruddy Irishman named Dan M. His wife's name was Barb, and she was as wide as she was tall (which wasn't very much). She had a hard time getting up into these full size trucks, especially 4wd, so the boys made...

Want to bag 79. But also want to keep it around stock.

Are you asking what is "F44 RPO"? www.gm.com/content/dam/company/no_search/heritage-archive-docs/vehicle-information-kits/chevrolet-trucks/1979-Chevrolet-Truck.pdf F44 is heavy duty chassis equipment. In this context a "Big 10". K

Want to bag 79. But also want to keep it around stock.

Agree with cut coils and relocated spring hangers. Did dozens of trucks that way over the last 45 years. Both of these were done that way. The red truck went 30 years and 200k miles as a daily with no issues. Total cost: $1.38 for some grade 8 bolts/nuts, plus a front end alignment. K

    2 tone paint line

For the 80's version the stripe itself forms the upper boundary. In fact, in the assembly plant the stripe was applied first. It had a mask attached to it so that the secondary color was sprayed over the stripe and all over the ecoated side. Then the shape was masked with paper and the...

I'd tie it to the top of the walls if I could, to drive the load to ground in that way. K

Rearend gear ratios 1980-1987 most common

Sorry - just now seeing this. I always ordered a 3.42 with a non overdrive transmission. Always ordered 3.73 when I had an overdrive. They provided a nice balance between off the line pep and highway fuel economy. The bulk of dealer stock vehicles had higher axles (lower numerically - like...

Yah - that's a miss relative to the artwork. No 5 lug 4wd squares. K

    Craziest antitheft idea yet.

Nah. I can still drag it up into my car trailer even if the wheels don't roll. Did it with my daughter's Cruze after it had been sitting a while and the park brake was stuck on. K

Have i decoded this VIN correctly????

This might be a good time to describe how the VINs were stamped in the factory. As I mentioned, I (briefly) ran the area on the Chassis Line - I think as a summer student. The VIN stamper is a large hydraulic "press" hanging from a tool rail and with the weight offset by a "balancer" (imagine...

Rear wheels are sucked in way more than front. K10. Adapters? BAD IDEA? pics inside

Correct - it's the internal program code. It went GMT400, then GMT800, then GMT900, then K2 (maybe) and then I don't remember - seems like there was a "T1" in there somewhere. What might not be obvious is you can then build additional information into the program code, like GMT820 = short...

Have i decoded this VIN correctly????

Post a photo if it is convenient. I used to be the foreman on the line where they were stamped. I think you'll find the VIN is on top and there are supplier marks, date codes and part number on the side. K
