Engine Block Heater for SBC 350

Before fooling around with block heaters, you need to get the choke sorted out. Zero degrees is not that cold. As mentioned, make sure the battery and cables are in good condition. If the engine cranks slow, it’s not going to want to start.

    Remote Start

I have used Viper and code alarm. I can’t remember what brand my son bought for his Yukon. It wasn’t a remote start or security, but did have keyless entry. Whatever brand it was seemed to work very well. He bought it thru Summit. You might check out Crutchfield. Their technical help might...

    transmission/oil cooler lines

I’m not sure what a fair price is, never had a pair to sell. Since im an Olds guy occasionally people ask if I know or have frame mounts for sale. The only pair I have are on my truck. I can’t think of any reason to keep the existing cooler. Either use a radiator or a stand alone cooler. Least...

    transmission/oil cooler lines

What year is your truck? I don’t recall any heat exchanger on my 81 GMC, but it’s been 30 years since I swapped in the 455. I have slept a lot since then. I’d suggest using a radiator with a trans cooler built into it, or using a stand alone cooler. Either way, don’t scrap the factory olds...

New build 454 and the wife hates the exhaust smell

Find someone who can tune the system for you. The self tuning will get it close, having it custom tuned will make a world of difference. Having said that, I’d consider using the matching distributor and using the sniper for timing control also. Hope you don’t have any issues with your...

Drop In Voltage from Windows and AC on

First things first. Remove and clean the battery terminals. Check the grounds at the engine, body, and firewall. Make sure the alternator belt is tight. Find someone with a charging system tester, make sure the alternator is actually capable of supplying the required current. Most vehicles with...

    Th400 kickdown switch

If it’s close, slip a piece of rubber hose over the switch. You can also use a hose clamp on the switch knob. McGuyverism!!

    Electric Choke Issues

With the engine completely cold (sitting overnight would be ideal) floor the throttle once. The choke plate should snap shut and the throttle go up on the fast idle cam. Loosen the screws for the choke heater, slowly rotate it until the choke plate closes, then go just a tiny bit further...

    What is this gauge?

The Buick dealership where I use to work had one of those thermometers in the glass display case, along with an add on Twilight Sentinel kit, keyless entry systems/alarms, and a bunch of other GM accessories. Some of them had been there for years, the boxes were sun faded so badly you could...

    HEI module dwell time.

Oldsmobile use to specify .080 plug gap, and then later revised it. If I remember correctly, the issue was low speed misfired and ignition component wear.

    HEI module dwell time.

When HEI first came out, the modules did have some reliability issues. It didn’t take long for Delco to figure it out and solve the issue. Unfortunately, the bad reputation still lingers. Even counting the time working in a dealership service department , I bet I have only replaced a dozen...

    Something killing battery

I’d suspect the battery has a bad cell or is just junk. I don’t see how the choke heater could drain a battery in 45 minutes. Test the battery, make sure the charging system is good.

    Brake light keeps going out

Eliminate all the other possibilties first, but if you have random taillight issues that can’t be solved, more than likely you have a defective turn signal switch. There are a bunch on contacts that have to make and break connections for the brake and turn signals to function, it’s kinda amazing...

Help with a possible transmission issue

A TH350 is the perfect beginner transmission. It’s easy to build, doesn’t require much in special tools, and what special tools are needed is easy to fabricate. Watch some YouTube videos before deciding if it’s something you want to attempt. Have a large clean work area, lots of bags to label...

    700r4 Governor cap

Sometimes you have to get rude with those. The steel cover on an aluminum case creates lots of “environmental loctite”. Your probably going to destroy it getting it out. Once it’s out, clean up the case. More than likely there will be some pitting. Put a thin coat of sealer around the cover...

1987 454 TBI down on power, runs good otherwise

Put a temporary tach on it. I’d be curious what the fuel pressure is doing at highway speed. I know you said the pressure is ok at idle, but you can make 12 psi thru a straw, the engine won’t be happy under a load. Same thing with exhaust. While a TBI 454 isn’t a powerhouse, I would think it...

1987 454 TBI down on power, runs good otherwise

Start in low gear, accelerate pretty hard. Watch the tach, around 3500-4000rpm put the shifter in 2nd gear, the trans should immediately and firmly shift into 2nd gear. Continue to accelerate, at around the same engine speed put the shifter into drive. It should immediately and firmly shift into...

    4l80e rebuild gone wrong...

Installing the sprag backwards is a mistake you only make ONCE. One of the first 400s I built I put the sprag on backwards. No 2nd gear, locked up in 3rd.

    Computer Control Quadrajet rebuild

Q-Jets are junk!! I just rebuilt it and it still doesn’t run right!!! Get a Holley!! With that standard of mechanical aptitude, it’s no wonder Q-Jets hace the reputation they do. How does anyone who hopefully knows which end of a screwdriver to hold make a mistake like that??? I’m surprised...

    Radio Wiring

Since these trucks never came with an amp or power antenna, GM didn’t include the wiring. More than likely, you will either need to add the wire to the existing connector or use a port in the fuse box that’s powered only in the run or accessory position. I’m assuming your radio plugs look...
