    Dome light went cross-eyed.

I did what @SquareRoot did, lighted rearview mirror. No other extras, just the lights. On with the dome or each side with individual switches. Shotgun rider needs to see to roll....

    question about gmc vs chevy

Okay, here you go. GMC kept a metal grille until 1972. Chevy went to plastic in 1967. And of course the best GMC grille in plastic was their first, 1973 & '74. :hands: I pulled the plastic grille out of my '82 and replaced it with metal and metal letters.

Your Van looks great for a 1977 living in the rust belt! Don't worry about the wrong center cap decals. You may be the only person that knows they are wrong, oh, plus some of the 34,000 members here you just told. :waytogo:

    Factory smoke

There is a possibility that the alternator didn't enjoy the reverse feed either. So the engine will run off the battery, but did you check the running voltage to see if the alternator is charging?

Anyone running an 8.1, what trans are you using?

Welcome to the forum Barry. @IDtag here is your answer, the Allison will fit. @SquareRoot Forget the body lift, all is well in Hooterville.

Anyone running an 8.1, what trans are you using?

Also, as far as I know the Allison was only in the HD or chassis cabs where the body mounted higher on the GMT800 series trucks. So you will have to make more room for it. (Can you say body lift?)

Anyone running an 8.1, what trans are you using?

The 1000 Allison would be my choice or stick shift. You can find them in some motorhome units.

    Transmission fail

First thing to check is the trans fluid level. Trans fluid is cooled by the radiator. If the trans oil cooler in the radiator leaks, the trans will pump oil into the radiator causing it to be over full. Then trans fluid and engine coolant will push out of the radiator. When ever you have a...

    Front end assembly hardware

Auveco Products supplied much of GM hardware. Your 1987 front sheet metal most likely has metric hardware. When GM changed the front on the square bodies, the US government was mandating any new designs be metric. So your truck has a mix of both :(. Here is a sample of some of the Auveco...

    Coolant leak? (picture)

Amazon prime day today. Ordered the Cubauto. Co-worker put one in his '99 Chevy oil burner, no issues. Got my fingers crossed, hope it's good.

Freeze plugs into the block- how to remove?

This ^^^ Also after you grab them with the Vise-grips, lean it to the side and pry it with a screw driver at the same time you pull with the grips. Once it turns in the hole, you can get a better grip. The freeze plug is a press fit so it needs a lot of pull to get it out.

    Shocks are like steel bars.

Shocks that loose their oil will lock up and act like steel bars. May not be all of them. One locked shock effects the whole suspension.

    Coolant leak? (picture)

Square body trucks were the last GM trucks built with a good radiator. I think my 1998 3500HD has a leak?? Definitely replacing it with a welded aluminum unit. Anybody used Cubauto?

Spare tire carrier? DONE, installed an in bed carrier

The glide out carrier was an option, so if your truck had that it would show on the RPO sticker. The bed carrier is better for your back. It does steal room from the load area, and if you get a flat with the bed loaded, you may need to remove the load to get it.

First drum brake job, 2 questions..

Second way is, vise grips locked on the long straight part of the adjuster spring. Then palm of your hand on the shoe, pull the vise grip over and hook the spring. I like the first way I posted better.

First drum brake job, 2 questions..

The trick is put that spring on first. Shoes off the truck on the ground or table. Swing one shoe over the other and slide in the adjuster. Now hang the two shoes up and on the anchor pin. Add the rest of the parts.
