Anyone ever put a 348-409 "W" motor in a squarebody?

A buddy of mine had a '62 half ton snb Chev 4x4 with a 348, it was pretty neat but he changed to a 283 instead. I think a rod bearing failed in the 348. I don't believe the truck originally came with the 348.

    Preferred location for battery ground

You can always solder them in and shrink tube the connector as well.

    shift indicator

I had a broken wire as . I thought about super gluing it back together then soldering it but finally bought a new one on ebay for $40. I also bought another one for a spare. I found out too that when you reassemble it in the dash, use lots of lube or it will hang up. Mine is for a 1975 K20...

    I melted a Piston, 250 Inline 6.

If I had been thinking, I would have. It made a horrible racket all the way home. You're never too old to learn. I'll remember that if it ever happens again, thanks!

    I melted a Piston, 250 Inline 6.

I had a 250 in a '81 Custom Deluxe that #1 piston went bad. I was driving down the highway at 60 mph and all of a sudden, there was a noise like a compression release being engaged. I didn't have a clue what the problem was but limped it home for 60 miles doing about 45 mph. When I got it home...

Anyone find value in putting quick connects for hydraulics for plow lines

I notice you have new coolant hoses and clamps, good for you!

    One side sagging

I read most of the fixes and they seem to take a lot of time, energy and money. Mine sagged to the driver side as well so I got underneath and looked things over , all looked well except the 45 year old original shocks. Shocks wear out sooner than 45 years. I bought a set of 4 Monroe heavy duty...

    Straight 6 to V8 swap?

I'd stay with the 250. I had an '81 SWB Custom Deluxe with the 250 and 3 speed on the column for 11 years. I too thought about installing a V8 but the 250 was pretty reliable. I did have a piston come apart once but just replaced the assembly (piston, rings, connecting rod and bearings) and it...

Spare tire: what’s a better deal?

It's a great idea to check the air pressure on the spare a few times a year, most people never check it and it's usually low by the time they need it, especially if it's mounted under the bed. Very few people rotate the spare in either, it's a great theory but in reality, it's not very common. I...

    Help! Carburetor on 250 I-6

You can't go wrong with a manual choke. It's closed when pulled out and open when pushed in. I have seen people, mostly young and not experienced, "forget" to push it in when the engine has warmed up resulting in fouled plugs. They're simple and they work.

Whats you gas mileage on your squarebody truck?

My '75 K20, 350 V8 with quadrajet and TH350 with 4:10 gears, single exhaust gets 10-12 mpg at 60 mph. While 4x4ing in the desert, I get a little better, possibly 14-15 mpg. That's all you'll ever get. I've had other 70's Chev pickups with 350's and 400's, all the same mileage. I love that VW...

    Adding gauges

I too, hate to cut up a dash and all my original gauges are operational but I wanted a volt meter and an accurate oil pressure gauge that I can trust. I would have liked to add a temp gauge as well but only two fit but that's ok. I cut the back out and I can epoxy it back in later, if I want. In...

    Any original squares out there?

Here is a 1975 Scottsdale, K 20. 350 V8, TH 350, 83,000 miles. The only thing non stock is manual hubs and transfer case modification. It was bought new in Oregon City, OR. I bought it 2 years ago from the widow of the original owner. I plan on leaving it all stock down to the single exhaust. It...

Best rear tires for 2wd moderate use 1/2 ton

I'd buy what you like. You're right about a heavier ply especially with a load. I had a '97 Dodge 1/2 ton. It didn't matter what tires were on it, if you went off pavement, you would get stuck or no traction. Keep some weight in the back. I got rid of the Dodge and bought a 1975 K20, no more...

    Any original squares out there?

I bought my 1975 Scottsdale K20 from the original owners widow a couple years ago in OR. It had 80,000 miles on it and now has 84,000. The full time transfer case has been modified to part time and locking hubs installed. I just replaced the original shocks, leaking p/s pump and hoses and...

    PCV valve rattle when running

Bad hearing solves a lot of my problems. I had hearing aids a long time ago but heard too many rattles and squeaks, it didn't sound good. Once I quit using the hearing aids, all my problems were solved!

79 250 integrated head exhaust manifold crack

I had an '81 250 with a cracked head. Our parts guy from NAPA in Fairbanks, AK took the head and shipped it to Seattle I think and had it repaired for me, the cost was reasonable. This was back in the 90's so it's not too sharp in my memory but, I believe there is someone out there that repairs...

    350 standard temp in Arizona.

Mine's all stock, 350, auto,no a/c, I live in northwest AZ and the stock gauge needle never goes to even 5/8, no temp numbers. It's a 1975 with 83,000 miles. I flushed the system, replaced hoses and thermostat and pressure cap, replaced overflow tank (rotten). It's never overheated. Always use a...

    New gauges installed.

I'm impressed! It looks very nice. I've done a few over the years and I found it tedious to do a good job like that. The end result makes it worth it though. I'm doing gauges in a '72 Olds 98 coupe right now. I'm used to looking at gauges and don't like driving anything without them

    For all you cap people.....

I had to stick a photo in too. Gem Sport, it came off a '77 GMC, it fit perfect on my '75 Chev. Canopies are great but you can't haul a lot with them on (dirt bikes, road bikes, etc).
