Starting to try to get this engine compartment looking better. Cleaning and slowing blacking things out.
Cleaning, like last fall’s leaves that are still there trying to decompose enough that they make a mess behind the firewall, block drainage from the cowl area and promote some good ole fashioned rust in virtually inaccessible areas?
That was sarcastic but serious. One of the trouble spots on squarebodys is largely due to leaves, cottonwood cotton, acorns and Maple helicopters being left to do their damage where is hard or impossible to see, much less reach.

As I had mentioned I am also going to try to install a cross over steering system myself. I have gotten the knuckles ready for install. I figured while I am at it I would replace the axle shafts as well. To be honest I had a really hard time installing the U Bolts. Finally got them done. Wish me luck this will be the first non cosmetic thing I will be attempting.
Looking good! Is there a reason you are replacing the axle shafts? And what u-bolts? Did you remove the front axle assembly just to do this work?

I just figured it would be a good time to do it while I have the wheels off. I had read that for the most part a GM 10 bolt front axel is strong enough for what I will be using it for but that if I were to upgrade the axel shafts I would never have to worry about it. Keeping in mind I will not be rock crawling in this thing. I haven’t take any U bolts off I only installed the two for each side of the inner and outer axels.

It’s good to know this. The leaves in the picture were from the prior owner when it was in TX but I do have a tree out front that drops a lot of crap so I will be mindful.

Fair enough, although front axle shafts aren’t an issue, barring what appears to be more power and more extreme use than your current plan.
We must be talking different U bolts, or do you mean u joints that I presume came pre-installed in the axle shafts?

You got a good start going on a cool rig! Engine compartment is cleaning up nicely!
Thanks I’m doing what I can at this point. I went to replace the headlights yesterday only to realize when I had the first one out in that they only sent me one. Now I am fighting with Amazon to get them to send me the second that they are claiming they did. In the mean time I’m driving around with two different headlights lol

I am hoping for some advice if you all don’t mind. I have been trying to get the speedometer to work in the truck and at this point I have replaced the cable running from the gage cluster to the transmission (not as straight forward as it might seem). When I first started to dig into it I found that the cable was running to what I think I have since learned is the controls for what was factory cruise control (no longer working because as you may recall this was converted from automatic to manual transmission). I removed the original speedometer cable from this location got a new cable and ran it from the back of the cluster to the transmission as I said. I have also tested it with a drill and the dash speedometer does work when tested. There was some part mounted on the transmission and the speedo cable went into it. I first tried to attach the new cable to the attached part and when I drove it “no speedometer”. At this point I removed the part and attached the speedo cable directly to the speedometer transmission gear opening and again when I drove it “no speedometer”. I have been trying to find something online about replacing the speedometer transmission gear with very little success. I have attached some pics for reference. I am wondering am i on the right track here or is there something else i am missing. If I need to replace the speedometer transmission gear Transmission gear any advise on doing that. Thanks again for all the help and any advice you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Question number 2. The above mentioned cruise control unit (pictures attached). First am I right in that it is in fact for the factory installed cruise control and then since the hoses are not attached to anything and there is only the green and blue wire that don’t appear to be doing anything. Am I ok to remove this unit completely. Thanks again

I don't believe the cruise transducer does anything to the speedo ratio so removing it should be fine. I'd save it as there is one person here looking for one and the mount - may be able to sell it. @Oldschooler

That box is a gear reducer to get the ratio right for the speedo. I'd guess the drive gear in the transmission needs to be replaced but I have never done one so can't offer advice. Sorry.

No problem at all at least I know I am in the right ballpark.
