Paul's 1972 Truck...

Zoom! New mandrel bent 3 inch exhaust and Magnaflow headers on the 307 (H pipe is coming soon)... getting ready for the built 350 eventually. We also did a 2 inch drop in the back, but you can't tell in the dark. The parts for a 2.5" front drop are in the shop waiting, and 4" drop leafs are on order.

Tard-o didn't even post a photo of the cool work we did.
He comes over for exhaust work and we end up doing all kindsa shish to his truck.
New thermostat, heater hoses, rear 2" drop shackles, and different headers.
Then we were able to get the new 3 inch pipes connected to the header collectors and run back to his 3 inch Magnaflow mufflers.

Here is where we started.
You can also see that he has tinted the windows on it, nice work.
It sits with a decent amount of rake towards the front, cool hot rod style.


It was raining.
Not cool timing Paul, not cool.
But we are used to working on stuff in the driveway under a canopy, so there is that.
Up in the air on the big 6 ton jack stands, the little 3 tons barely ever get used anymore.


Clean and spiffy.
Notice those paint detailed headers.
Those have had the collector end cut off and have been welded to the exhaust with a little shop built reducer.
So those have to go as that is not friendly to future work.

Sheesh! It was late and I was getting there!

welded mandrel bent 3" pipes to replace the crappy 2" stuff - killer work by Max!

I don't mess around when I blow holes old mufflers!

The new hotness

Here we have Max showing us how much he likes working in the driveway in the rain.

Hmmm.
This is one of the reasons he wanted to get this all done up.
There is a significant hole in one of the crappy muffler shop mufflers that are under the truck.
He made an effort to plug it, but that lasted about 3 minutes and it got hot enough to melt the aluminum tape he held the patch on with.

Oh and those bad boy mufflers necked the smol collector piping down from the 2-1/4" inch to a miniscule 2 inch for the rest of the system that came on the truck.

We have several sets of SBC headers here in the inventory as the '49 has some weirdness.
So we bought them on the cheap to hack up.
It turned out that we have the same exact set of headers that were on his truck.
With the collector rings intact!
Score.
They however needed to be washed off as they may have been poorly stored in the dirt and leaves.
The other set we dug out did not fit the truck at all, so back they go.


Ah fresh and clean.
Whelp, clean enough that is.


They had to go to the parts store for a few things, so I dug in and unbolted the existing headers.

Putting the number 5 bolts in on this set of headers, sucks.


Watching and day dreaming about the new noise...


Now its time to weld the muffler to the head piping...


Max is getting pretty good at this exhaust and muffler fab stuff.
Even though he dislikes it being outside in the winter very much...

Viola!
One side is done.

Putting plug wires on #5 sucks as well...


So cute and suckass for any kind of power.


This should do for any level of power he puts in the engine bay.

So yeah, I finished to the doors with new windows and seals, then made custom interior door panels from scratch. I'm pretty happy with how they came out!

(Note the sweet cool whip tub to catch the water that drips off the e brake pedal )

Tinted and new seals. I also swapped the door handles and lock cylinders and replaced the old camper mirrors with new sport ones. If you look close you might see the camo duct tape covering the holes... Or maybe you won't!

All that stuff took place on Dec 26th.
For the next stuff it happened on Dec 29th starting at 4:30pm or so.
Already dark.
And raining again.

For the plug wires, I ended up doing the Frieberger way of separating them with zip ties.
I didn't take a photo of that as it was late on Sunday when that took place.

Here we are making the tailpipes.
Last episode we had head pipes and mufflers.
This is the fun part as it is what people will be seeing or not seeing if we are good.

45 - 90- 45 makes it easy peasy to get it all lined up and tight fitting.


Trying to decide where to have the pipes exit under the truck.
Being that it is a leaf spring truck and not a trailing arm truck makes this whole process much better.

One side all finish welded and ready to go under the truck.

Both tail pipes finished and they match pretty well too!
The exhaust kit came off Amazon and was like $155 shipped after coupon applied!
I also gave the ends a quick slash cut to take off some of the hideous pop the pipes had.
But it will definitely be getting a H pipe to help as well.


Nailed the targeted exit on both sides.
When the truck is on the ground you cannot see much of it at all from the side.
A pencil tip will take care of that as will some black paint to hide it even more.
From the back, the whole thing is hidden behind the bumper and nothing shows.

Got it all finished up and heading home at the ripe hour of 12:00am Monday morning.

Here is the first drive-by as he headed on home with the full system in place.

It's a beaut! It's rumbly and gets rowdy in the upper revs. As my wife says "not subtle." I say "hot rod subtle!"
