I see my work here is done.

It was changed as a cost savings.

Forged = RPO PH7

Cast = RPO N90

I think the forged wheel will be smoother on the backside, whereas the cast wheel will have more of an "as cast" texture. Any visible parting lines are wider on a forged part than on a cast part.

I had a set of rallys with snow tires mounted that I ran in the winter. My aluminum wheels never saw snow.

I think only the hoops are forged, not the centers on the earlier ones. The hoops on the inside of the forged ones are MUCH smoother.

here are the only markings i could find on mine.

I really like the way that center cap looks with the bullet on it. Where did you find those?
The centers are the same as the rally wheel center caps. All rally centers have a hole in the center under the sticker. The hole is perfectly placed to mount these 3" bullets from ebay. I had to buy bolts the correct length, used lock washers, and put epoxy on the bolts when i screwed them in to keep the bullet from coming loose.

Not 8 lug (may have been a typo).

5 Lug and 6 lug only.

We never did have a nice factory aluminum wheel for 8 lug, particularly dually. I always had to run a set of aftermarket Alcoa wheels on those.

There was an 8-lug version briefly, on some special edition GMC's. I believe the first to get them was the '76(?) Indy pace truck replicas and the second truck to get them was the '78 "Sarge" package. There may have been another application too, not sure.

They were 16.5x8.25", iirc.

Interesting...N90 is the same RPO code for alloy wheels that was used in the OBS era. Good to see it has some history!
Even in a b&w pic that is still a badass looking truck!

Those Sarge wheels would look SO COOL on my Crew Cab...but they probably would cost more than I paid for the truck, as rare as they gotta be....

I've seen them listed in Sales Brochures as early as 1976, but as a dealer installed accessory. I never saw them very often until they started using them on a lot of Vans, Suburbans, and Blazers around 1987.

It is my understanding there are two versions that look basically the same from the front. An earlier version made by Alco with a forged rim, and a later version made by Western that was cast not forged. Mine are the Alcoas that I found on facebook marketplace that had been sitting in the woods or at least a decade. Then i cleaned them up, sanded out any curbing and polished them.


Dayumm they look hella good polished up! Should have done that myself when I still had Silvy.

They don't even have center caps in the photos. I would be inclined to believe it's something that got created for the photo and then went no further.

The '76 was pace truck was an 8-lugger. I even got to see a real live one back in '99-ish. It was being driven by a scrapper in north Columbus and it was in very rough condition. Still had the wheels though. I'll bet that truck itself became scrap shortly after that.

Looking around at the Google again, I realized I made a mistake earlier. The Sarge was offered in '77, not '78.
But there are pictures of real live Sarge trucks, they are just blurry.

One thing I noticed, the ad pictures of the Sarge show what seems to be the exact same wheel/tire package (including tire model) that was shown on the '76 Indy pace trucks. Also without center caps.

^^^I also just realized that more than one truck was used for photos. The two I posted above have two different styles of bed rails.
