Th400 Torque Converter Shaft Seal

Going through the truck fixing up leaks and such, and figured I would replace the torque converter shaft seal while the transmission will be dropped for front pump seal replacement, just to be safe while it's out. Was looking around, and didn't find much on it, so figure I'd ask where it's located on the converter and how to replace it. Thanks in advance guys.

Check the pump bushing once you have the front seal off. If it's excessively worn, trans would have to come out so it can be replaced.

They call it a front pump seal. I've gone rounds with parts counter smart asses lol
Thank you for the response. Totally right, I might be losing my mind lol. Rockauto had pump seal and torque converter seal separate so I assumed different things.

You're welcome...I should clarify my above to say the pump would have to come out and apart so you can replace the bushing, if worn as the transmission will already have been taken out so you can replace the seal. Also wondering if Rock Auto is listing the pump's perimeter o-ring seal that seals the pump against the case as the "pump seal" and the front seal itself that seals off the torque converter hub as the "torque converter seal". I haven't looked on their website but that's my guess as to why you're seeing two very similar listings for a pump seal.

Since you will have the pump open, do the following checks:

- Inspect the pump body working surface for scoring, unusual wear, etc

- Check the leading and trailing edge of the crescent - wear here is ceru detrimental to line pressure management inside the unit

- Inspect the drive and driven gear for wear, scoring, cracks - check the teeth (both sides of each tooth and crest for wear as well. You can also put them together then attempt to slide the drive gear out of engagement from the driven gear while on the bench...If the drive gear easily comes out of engagement from the driven gear, the gear set is worn and should be replaced.

- If you have a straight edge and feeler gauges (and/or a depth mic, 0-1" ouside mic, 4-5" outside mic and inside mic) check the clearances between the face of each gear and pump body deck surface...I prefer a gear face to deck clearance between .0008-.003....If your clearance is in excess of .003, I'd buy new set of gears.

- Use a feeler gauge to check the gap between the outer diameter of the driven gear and the inner diameter of the pump pocket...If it's more than .005" buy a new set of gears
