I called Cliff this morning and left a message.
He called back in about 15 minutes and we yacked almost an hour.
You can send him a plate to bush if you wish and he still sells a nice bushing kit.

So he is still kick'in it and doing well.

What are you using to clean or soak you carbs for cleaning now days.

I cant justify a ultra sonic cleaner price for a couple carbs

Years ago when I was playing with motorcycle carbs, I found a small parts washer. I have a couple gallons of Berryman carb cleaner in it.
Cleaning the 3 main body parts took most of the day.
I would let the part soak a couple hours and then hit it with a small brush, then repeat until clean.
I like Berryman because you can use paper towel to dry it off, mostly and then Dawn dish detergent and hot water cleans it right up.

Ive always used just many cans of Crab cleaner and brushes and air compressor blow nozzle

I soaked this one in a bucket of diesel fuel for many days (got a propane heater in my shop, fire safety)and brush scrubbed for exterior gunk.

Got the base plate real clean, but still need a bunch of work time on the bowl and top. Its just real time consuming, the dreaded hardest part :thumbsdown: of rebuilding a carb, getting it real clean.

Is that a late 60s carb? Its older style

Looks pretty clean . Mine pretty clean but, I still have black inside my venturi area of the bowl section, and some black on the inside areas of my top plate. Neither of my two have any corrosion at all.

Need to do some cans of carb cleaner spray sessions and tooth brush type plastic brush work.

Ive never used water or dawn soap , Fear of corrosion, if left to sit. Definitely have to use air compressor and heat right away to evaporate moister out of tiny passages ways

You thread and use pipe plugs on the casting plugs? Or put epoxy over them?

Have bushinged many Q-jets over the years, but only one or two in the last 15 or so years.

Glad to see others still doing it.

I wonder if a little spray oven cleaner would easily dissolve the black crude in the venturi inside areas without doing any damage?

If the factory plugs look intact, I don't monkey with them. If they leak, I can machine new plugs and use a polyester epoxy to seal.

My biggest challenge was to repair a snapped off vacuum port on the pass side of the carb. That's the one located behind the choke linkage.
That was fun, for sure.

I use a heat gun to dry out all the moisture hiding.
But never ever spray any lube anywhere. Not even WD40. Nada!

Why never?
Is that because of sticky goo and hard varnish residue?
Ive seen a WD40 dried varnish when wd40 dries on guns

Why not just get a gal can of the carb cleaner? And while at the parts house, pick up a pack of brushes and hit the head shop and get bristled pipe cleaners.
Let it soak over night.

I think this brush kit was like $20.

I didnt think you can even get that stuff anymore. I live in the boonies and cant get stuff like that anyway
I heard years ago it is all environmentally safe and weak and useless. And the price is outrages

I have plenty of gun/shotgun brass/bronze brushes. But its not a good idea to use metal brushes or stainless steel brushes, rough on the carb casting and bits of wire can break off and get lodged in passages and bleed holes
