Bypass is drilled in block, but some use more bypass,I don't think vortec blocks are drilled for bypass,so some use heater core as bypass. If your block doesn't have this hole,or it's plugged you have to provide bypass some how. I thought maybe yours was plugged or maybe vortec block.
My block and water pump do have the extra hole as you shown in the pic. Thanks for post so that for other to see. I have a 1999 Vortec in my 80 Z28 and it also had the bypass hole for water pump.

Here is the Donor.

the pictures you show are of a serpentine system, my 86 k10 is not a serpentine system. i did not think any thing before about 87 was a serpentine system. anyway my stock non serpentine system is waterpump to heater back to the radiator. if you bypassed your heatercore you probably just hooked the hoses together which left the bypass operable. I do have a couple of serpentine belt squarebodies to compare to. my k5 is now a ramjet but i used all the 86 factory accessories and hose routing which was a really big job i would not do again. afterwards i figgured out i should have used the serpentine system from a camaro with the tube style fi so the ramjet intake would fit in the center over the thermostat, its been that way 20+ years now. three belts to deal with instead of one. my bad.

Git rid of all that modern crap and put the clutch fan and radiator shroud back on.
