17-in rims

My 1980 GMC k 30 dual wheel truck came with 16-in rims from the factory, tires for this 16 in are getting harder to find so I thought of upgrading to the 17 in, the problem is GMC went to metrics and finding a set of dual wheels that will fit that can be a challenge but I found that Dodge did not go to metrics on their bolt hole spacings until about 2018 so I found a set of 17 inch rims off of 2010 Dodge 1 ton dually, the bolt patterns are the same as 1980 but the center hole is a little larger so my only concern is will these rims center themselves on the hubs when I bolt them down or do I have to do something different? I appreciate all your help and advice!

What do the lug nuts look like currently? Most DRW I know of are hub centric. If they are [lugnuts] flat with a swaged washer then those should be Hub not lug centric (since there is not conical feature for locating)

Dodge hub center bores are about 1/4” larger diameter than the GM’s are. You can likely source hub centric adapters if you go that route. Run at your discretion.

AFAIK, squarebody wheels are lug centric, not hub centric ( like many newer vehicles).
That may not be true.

Had a customer with a concrete cutting business [heavy for a 1 ton]. He liked shinny stuff and installed Alcoa wheels. Then the trucks started shearing off rear studs. A couple times driving in the city both wheels came off one side, trucked dropped with expected damage. We fixed it twice with GM parts then dove deep into what was going on. Turned out the Alcoa wheels were not hub centric putting all the load on the studs. After replacing wheels with original hub centric style never broke another stud. These trucks were likely overloaded never weighed one. Just food for thought.

That's what hubcentric does,displaces the shear load from the studs and puts it on the hub. I'd want something hubcentric. When you hit a bump all the upward shock force is all on the little 1/2 studs instead of shared with a 4 inch diameter hub.

Yeah that's what we figured out. Those Alcoa wheels had a larger center that fit other brands. Should have realized what was going on after the first fail. In addition the inside wheels were stock steel. Aluminum wheels flex more increasing the side load.

Maybe you can get a local machine shop to make up some hub centre adapters for the wheels ? We have a local shop that is happy to make up all sorts of weird stuff. just make sure they use the right grade of steel ( nothing too soft )..

Thank you for your replies, a lot of good information. They make hub centering rings all the way up to full size adapters, some of these rings are made out of the tea grade aluminum some out of polycarbonate.

There are several websites that have wheel hub adapters, Amazon has several different sizes I was able to find one that fits the hub of my 1980 GMC and will allow centering the 17 inch rims so that the weight rests on the hub perfectly and not the nuts or the studs

I bought those rings off of Amazon, they have many different sizes made out of different materials.

On a side note they fit snug inside the rim, the outside diameter 121.3, mm but they fit a little loose on the hub, 116.7 mm inside diameter. When I measure the hub diameter of the original rims it measures out 115.7 mm, maybe this small difference won't matter?
