I got it. Sat and played with old distributor. So I'll just loosen the distributor and rotate it counter clockwise and make the next post my #1.
This way my rotor stays pointed at piston 1 and I have room to play with timing.
Gold star?

I'm not sure about a gold start, but you at least get an A for effort, lol.

True, you guys get the gold star for helping the inexperienced. I appreciate everyone pitching in. It's these simple things that I can take for granted.
Check out our "Betty Blue" build page.
Father daughter build. Hopefully running before end of year. We install Saturday.

Also, when you "move" the #1 cylinder on the cap, the firing order is still the same, so all the other wires on the cap have to move the same number of places on the cap. The cap is indexed to the metal rim of the distributor so that it only reinstalls in one orientation.

On a Chevy V8, you can orientate the dizzy wherever you want AND have the #1 post be wherever you want. Just set the engine to TDC and drop the thing in wherever you want, but making sure the rotor is where you want it to be as well. The only tricky part is turning the oil pump drive shaft to match where you want the rotor to be pointing.
Bucket has it right, you can
move or set the distributor in any position you want as long as where you drop it in the rotor aligns with the designated #1 on the cap and the engine is on TDC
