So, at $2600 let's say $1000 is for parts, I am sure a transmission shop can get through a teardown and rebuild in 8 hours.$2600 seems in the right neighborhood for a 700R4 behind a 383, and I've hand customers spend a lot more than that to get them to the point they're survivable at 383/Big Block power and torque levels...Whether you thought it was a stupid idea to dump $2600 into a 700R4 is another matter but the shop's price sounds reasonable to me.
Go to any wrecking yard and yank one out then go through it. TH400s are relatively straightforward to work on, have very few weaknesses, all of which can be addressed on overhaul and will last a very long time if you put it together correctly.
That's $200/hr. labor charge?
