Yes, as a test could disable air pump for a short drive. Did you check exhaust with a load? Really doesn't take much of a leak to cause a backfire.- fast 99

Is the air pump diverter valve functioning? exhaust leaks? Most common cause is O2 entering exhaust causing unburnt fuel to ignite.- fast 99

Hydro brakes
From the factory generally hydroboost was used on higher GVW and diesel vehicles. I had a fleet of these trucks with both vacuum and hydroboost. If vacuum will work for the application that's what I prefer. Hydroboost is more expensive to repair. Adds several more components [hoses] and other... -

Twitchy steering with a big travel trailer (rear sway bar help?)
Those would be passenger or SUV tires. Will never work. No reputable tire shop would install P rated in the place of LT tires on a 3/4 ton vehicle, liability. Look at the load capacity on the sidewall.- fast 99

Highway vibration 55-65mph
When vibrating at speed put tranny in neutral. If vibration continues would eliminate engine related issue.- fast 99

Tire brand, air pressure and incorrect load rating can contribute to unpleasant driving experience. Assume alignment especially caster and toe is within spec. On 2wd toe changes with frame height change.- fast 99

Accel HEI Super Coil (140003) Magic or Trash
If you are referring to offshore parts I agree. Original GM failures are very rare. We used to pull distributors out of cars going to the crusher. With only basic checks installed them for hobby stock racing to 6500 without issues. Beyond that coil saturation [dwell] becomes a problem. MSD...- fast 99

^^^agree^^^ Stock HEI coils commonly produce 40KV and are dependable. My opinion replacing with an aftermarket "upgrade" a waste of money.- fast 99

rough idle
Engine running dribble fuel into the front venturies one side at a time. If one picks up and smooths out that side idle circuit is restricted. Take the idle mix screw out of that side, squirt carb cleaner and or air into the hole where the screw was. Doesn't always work but worth a try.- fast 99

5.7 back fires through carb but timing is good.
40% is high but that alone isn't enough to condemn the engine. Old cold [when tested] engines can read high and be good runners. Was it leaking by any of the valves or into crankcase?- fast 99
