    Saginaw Steering Gear Rebuild - Special Tools?

    YouTube has all kinds of videos on rebuilding Saginaw steering boxes. The only "special" tool needed would be a spanner wrench but you can use a needle nose pliers instead. Snap ring pliers are needed as well.

    Heat it up with a small torch on low heat. After a few minutes try again with your prying tools.

    The plug configuration is different after '84. 84 and under is round with I think spade connectors whereas the 85 and up are a smaller diameter with pin connectors.

    If it were me, I'd go at it with a regular 1/2" ratchet but only after I heated the bolt up and then I would tighten then loosen then tighten some more, work it back it forth until it comes completely out. Then run a wire brush over the threads and then wash it off with PB Blaster. Then spray...

    No, they just give it that dimension before planning after it being cut from the log. Same as a 2x4 actually being 1.5"x3.5".
