489ci tow build...
Will your 489 use headers or manifolds? You could likely skip building a stroker for no more than what's needed, that's equal to using a 3lb hammer to drive regular nails. A better 454 would serve you fine and use a little less fuel.- 68post

The restrictions in a 305 are it's awful bore size coupled with it's diminutive size with low compression, and you severely need compression @ 7,000'. Not the heads which are normally just fine to boost compression on a 350, (unless you have the worst versions). The cam is sometimes smaller...- 68post

Idle Mixture Screws Do Not Adjust Anything on 1974 454.
If you bought a "brand new" quadrajet then it is the problem (only chinese are making them, and not correctly), if it's a commercially rebuilt unit then it's the problem. 400 SBC Build - Tight Budget
Don't be argumentative just for the sake of it. Yes, you can install a 4 cyl with a turbo and make more power than a stock smogger 454, but that obviously is not my point. EVERYONE can see the point made, destroking your 400 will not instantly make it a high revving powerhouse that blows away...- 68post

Destroking an engine is a step backwards, unless it is to reach a cubic inch limit for class racing. Potentially less HP, or maybe the same HP - but at a higher rpm, but always with less TQ. 302 ci loses to a 327, and the same comparing a 327 to a 350, or 350 to a 400. 14 bolt gear ratio?
The quick n dirty is a trans swap only. Small differences in rear gear ratio are hardly noticed unless there's a big jump, and around town - not at all. The .70 overdrive of a 4L60/700R4 makes the 4.56 gear feel like a 3.21 exactly (do the math, 3.192). I wouldn't go with any higher in a truck...- 68post

Question on tire size for an '85 K20...
Your rim width, if wider than stock, will have an effect on what rubs. 33's on a ten inch rim will hit the back of the front fender on a K30, I can hear mine touch with new springs, 1" zero rates, and ORD HD shackles (extra 1/2").
