The 8.5 diff didn't come out until 71, and chevy was pretty slow to give up on their 8.2. I would make damn sure its actually an 8.5... -

The spline change was a year thing, not car vs truck. All 8.5 axles were 28 spline into 87, beyond that they all went to 30 spline.
