Ok so after looking around...

My squarebody trucks have the filter, including the '88 TBI one.

My '90 C1500 TBI does not have one.

My '92 TBI Camaro does have one, but interestingly, my Tuned Port Camaros do not have a filter.

None of my Celebrities have one, they are multi-port V6 cars of varying years.

So with all that, I still can't figure out what types of vehicles got the filters. It would seem that it was only the carb and TBI vehicles that got the filter, but my '90 ruins that theory.

Also interesting, my '84 still employs a filter. I could have swore I removed that thing when I did a bunch of other work under the hood. I guess I lied earlier, lol.

Okee dokee...
My turn!

89 r1500 burb, 5.7 tbi = filter
91 k5, 8.2L efi = filter (I never touched the booster)
87 v10 burb 5.7 tbi = filter
94 s10 4.3L cmfi= NO FILTER!

According to LMC, 78+ had the filter. If one is missing in that date range, chances are someone removed it.

Edit to change hear to 78

More than likely someone ripped it off the s10

When we rebuilt that 4.3 6 years ago, I don't remember removing it? But that's not to say the people before me may not have removed it. That thing was in a real state of disrepair when I got it lol.

I need to look for pictures of my old S10 underhood. I don't remember the filter and it was a 100% original truck when I got it. I was familiar with the booster hose though, because after the left engine mount broke, the hose pulled off the booster every time I launched it.

Wanna say I've messed with other 4.3 junkyard trucks and they didn't have that filter on them.
Even the newer 95+ s10 blazers. Idk about all s10's, I just pick at the 4.3 CMFI four speed auto trucks.

Seems possible the tbi 4.3's had them.

@78C10BigTen , what about your s10? It's 4.3 tbi

Does it have a brake booster filter?

(I don't think he's told anyone about his new toy yet lol)

More for the list:

'93 TBI Suburban, no filter (original GM plumbing too)

'90 Cavalier Z24, no filter.

I'm definitely not sold on these filters. If they were so important, GM wouldn't have opted to leave them off of half the vehicles they built.

What do the vehicles with them have in common?

So far it seems like RWD based cars with carb or TBI only and squarebody trucks regardless of induction type.

The vehicles that all have them, must have dirty dusty interiors that need to filter the incoming air.

:33:

That's because pollen filters were twenty years in the future when these trucks were designed. :D
