OK...how do you get at the bolt that comes out of the windshield pillar and bolts to the weld nut on the upper hinge? I cant find any access holes or any way to get at it.

Stick your head way up under the dash. Locate the penetration for the white wires going to the door jamb switch.

That hole will have a rubber gland with the wires passing through it.

Disregard that, and keep looking higher (maybe 2- 3 inches) and you'll find another 1 inch penetration. Stick your finger in there and you'll feel the head of the covert bolt. It takes the same size socket as the others (9/16").

Oops - sorry! The above applies to 81-87. It may hold true for early years - but I wouldn't know.

After further review...there isn't a second hole. My suspicion is that my '73, being the first year of this body style, may not have gotten the access hole like the later trucks.

Is there a plug with a wire (s) going through it - for the dome light switch? Maybe it's behind that.

Here are the 3 complete factory manuals for your truck. I would suggest downloading them (and also saving them on a CD) - they are not easy to find:

Service Manual:

I looked at my '73 last night and the grommet for the courtesy light switch wires is the same to get to that bolt. I'm guessing they figured why drill two holes when they could use one.

Later on they got dumb and drilled another hole.
