Hey guys, anyone have any tips or tricks on removing the 700r4? Anything hidden? Then does anyone have tips on putting a new one in? Doing tranny swap in my garage.

4WD right? So you got to drop the drive shafts and T-Case. I'd take the distributor cap off the distributor so you can tilt the motor down SOME but don't let it hit the firewall and watch your fan shroud clearance. Not sure what kind of exhaust you have that might be in the way as well. Unbolt the inspection cover and braces off the bottom of the trans and unbolt the torque converter. Unplug the harness from the trans and remove the TV cable off the throttle linkage. Unbolt your trans cooling lines and bell housing bolts and drop her down.

Make sure you get all of the torque converter bolts out or you'll have a huge mess, and remove the dipstick tube too.

Yup, I forgot to type that, torque converter bolts off before unbolting trans. You got a trans jack?

He'll need help and make sure you have the tv cable hooked to the new trans before you put it into the truck it is a pain to get the tv cable hooked up from underneath

-Wrap the ujoints with tap so the caps dont fall off and send needle bearings everywhere.

-Be prepared for a fight with studs if you have manifolds. I highly suggest removing and trashing the old studs. Get new ones in the "HELP" section of any auto parts store, I leave the springs off and install it back together with brass nuts found in the same section.

-Already mentioned once but oil absorb, big ass bag of it.

-Replace the rear main seal while its apart, yours should have a 2 piece seal.

-Use several extensions and a wobbly to get the bolts at the top of the bellhousing.

-Make sure the torque converter is completely seated before installation or it will ruin the transmissions pump.

-use a bell housing bolt, a wrench and a bolt in the flex plate to keep the engine from turning.

-Make sure you use a torque wrench on the flex plate bolts.

Thats all I can think of.

I'm removing everything and putting a new torque converter in. It doesn't seem like to bad of a job. Any other advice?
1.drop the transfer case
2.remove flex plate cover
3.remove torque converter bolts
4.remove distributor and tilt engine down
5.remove bell housing bolts
6.slide old transmission out.
I have one more question. When putting the new torque converter on. Do I mount it to the transmission or engine first? Also, how do I get to the torque converter bolts

You put the torque converter on the transmission first and spin it a few times, You should feel it fall into place a couple of times.

And you remove the dust cover on the bottom of the transmission and the bolt heads are on the backside of the flex plate, you'll have to spin the motor over to get to all of them.

I wish I had the following info when I changed my first transmission. I did not know about the "3 jumps" that should be felt when setting the torque converter into the pump and I had never seen the attached clearance chart. The result; I damaged the pump and - even though I was finally able to assemble it - within a few weeks, the entire transmission failed:

Also, don't be surprised if the flex to T/C bolts are metric and require a 15 mm wrench.
