Yesterday I tried to put my truck in 4L for the first time. I had a very hard time to disengage the low gear and to get back into the 2H. Probably because the whole leverage/linkage hasn't been used for years. Any tips on what I need to do? I guess I need to lubricate everything....or do I need to take it apart and check it?

The linkages can get sticky if they don't get some maintenance on occasion, did you have the trans in neutral when you went from low range to high range? Sometimes it makes a difference, sometimes not. I can't recall off the top of my head if these trucks are supposed to be in neutral, going from low to high or if I'm thinking of a different make of 4x4.

Yes, I just read the user manual and it does say you have to put it in Neutral. I think I put it in park, not in Neutral.

The service manual doesn't say much about maintenance of the linkage and of the transfer case...

Really, the only maintenance the t-case needs is the regular fluid changes, unless you do a lot of off-roading in wet ares. The linkages themselves, just need a good soaking with some penetrating oil like PB Blaster from time to time. Spray them down, let it set for a couple minutes, and then work the shifter through the ranges. Repeat as needed until it's working normally.

They do need to be opened up once in a while to change the shift fork pads. Also the linkage needs to be adjusted properly to prevent premature wear of the shift fork pads.

208s can develop a bent shift fork too

I'll check the transfer case and linkage as soon as I have some time to work in the truck. Thanks!
