on an 87 4x4 short bed, how much lift can a stock drive shaft support without needing to be modified? No hard wheeling just a little fun. 4speed manual and a NP208.

You'll be fine with a 4" & may get away with 6". I just put a 6" on my '87 & used the stock shafts. The splines aren't showing up front & there's a shiny ring on the rear yoke where it's pulled out a bit. Should be alright as long as you're not hard-core wheeling.

I put 6" lift on my old crew cab and kept the stock driveshafts but the front was max'd out, this wasn't a problem though since I did not wheel it. The real problem was that it hit the exhaust crossover so I had to have that modified.

I cut through my crossover. I've gotta get that fixed now too.
