Spring hanger

Hey everyone! Does anyone know what the purpose of the metal piece that’s sitting on top of the spring hanger is? It’s on a 1980 Chevy K10, suspension is all original except this piece. It’s only welded to the bottom of the frame (circled in red). It’s not welded to the hanger or hanger support. I just noticed it while spraying fluid film. Thanks!

Looks like something a previous owner added. Maybe a poor attempt to block crud from accumulating?

No welding took place on the frame line in the assembly plant. Only rivets.

So - not factory.

Yea it’s definitely not factory, I’m curious why someone would weld it there, doesn’t seem to serve any purpose.
