On my 70 with a small block GM, I believe engine, the starter bolts with three horizontal bolts to the bell housing. Ever other small block GM I've been aware of uses 2 vertical into the engine block. As well it is a running old bugger! Best I can recall I bought the old truck in 08 ish... either the engine was fresh or some one took it out and painted it orange...
Any one have any information on what I may have in the old 70?
Thanks

Shakey

Are there any bolt holes in the block where the starter would normally go? May have an old style bellhousing someone just threw on there to make it work?

not that I am aware of. Was a long time ago I changed the starter, and do not recall bolt holes nor a flat spot on the block....

Some older bell housing had the stater bolted directly to the bell housing instead of the block.

My memory may be wrong, but that sounds like the 230/250/292 I-6 bellhousing.
And as for block to bellhousing pattern, I believe the 235 (OLD school) was different, but the 230,250,292,283,302,305,307,327,350,400 and all the big blocks were the same pattern.

I have run a few sixes many decades ago, and I seem to recall they used the three bolt to the bellhousing starter.
Just for giggles, do a parts search for a 250 starter from the mid sixties, see what they show.

If you have a cast iron bellhousing it's not original to a square, I'm pretty sure . Think the cast ended in the middle to late 60's. If I'm wrong someone will chime in.My 56 Chevy 2 dr 210 had a cast bellhousing with mounts to the frame on each side and a 3 bolt starter. It was a 265 with no bolt holes in the block for a starter. Kevin is right about the engines he listed for the pattern on the bell to block.

I completely forgot about the 265 in my list.
Thanks for jogging the dust covered brain cell.

You're very welcome, but don't tell anybody that I had a lucid moment.

As for being in the wrong forum, just wait until I go pick up a truck a friend has wanted to give me for 30 years, a 1942 GMC 6x6 10 wheel drive 2 and a half tom flatbed .....
