Looking have both to swap into my 84. With OD not being and issue which is stronger.

Probably a horse a piece, strength wise. The sm465 was used in medium duty trucks. NV4500 will shift a bit smoother, but if you aren’t worried about OD, the SM465 will be much cheaper to buy.

Both are strong. Both would be considered bullet proof. Hell, you could probably literally shoot either of them and not hurt them. The 465 isn't so finicky about the fluid you pour in it and it doesn't have the 5th gear issue like the 4500 sometimes has... for obvious reasons, haha :rofl:

IMO, SM465 best truck manual tranny.

Research I have done pretty much says the same thing you guys have said. Rear nut coming loose is more apparent on diesel application when pulling In 5th gear. Believe I will go with the nv4500 and install a Doug Nash overdrive unit and use it as the od when pulling my car trailer or otherwise loaded heavy. With a 4.56 rear gear hopefully I can use 5th plus the od when not loaded. Should put me around the 3.0 gear range. 8.1l engine should have the power. Thanks for the replies.
