Shift rod issue

I have an 87 V10 that originally came with a 700r. It now has a 305 out of an 84, a th350 from ? year and a np205 transfer case from 78. Many things on the truck were rigged and I've been working them out over the past year. I think I'm missing a part on the end of the shift rod because it slips out of the yoke on the side of the transmission. The 90 degree bend on the end prevents it coming all the way out but it slips part way out and won't go all the way into park.

It is an easy enough fix but it happens again fairly quickly. If there was a hole in the end of the rod I would put a cotter pin in it and call it a day but there isn't. How was it originally installed? Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

The first pic shows the rod installed all the way and working properly. Its slips half way out so the end is inbetween the two parts of the yoke and it won't go into park and is a pain to get into gear.

Look closer, it definitely takes a cotter pin at the end. Matter of fact, I think I can still see the end of what was once a pin in your lever arm. Ah... maybe not, yours is kinda close to the end. But regardless, it is drilled for a pin - maybe 1/4" back from the end:

Also you are missing a plastic bushing. It goes in the cup that is mounted to the frame rail and supports the outer end of the cross-shaft (my made up part name - probably really called something else). The spring that shows in your image pushes up against it.

The linkage will definitely work without a bushing - but it just feels clunkier when shifting.

Both the bushing at the top of the rod where it connects to the steering column and the control arm bushing that is supposed to be in the bracket on the frame are Dorman parts and can be found at most parts stores on the Dorman rack.

That bushing and spring can be replaced without removing the shift linkage setting bolt. I did it and lived to tell about it. Like a boss.

Yep, the big culprit there is the missing of the plastic or poly bushing. Kinda looks like a 1/3 of a ball with a hole in it.

Thanks guys, you were right. There is a hole at the end of the rod. I just couldn't see it because it is filled with crud. I ordered the bushing and it should be here next week. In the mean time I just put it in neutral and slide it back in and hold it in place with a piece of wire. Works fine in the mean time. Thanks again!

another video to add in case you've had yours off for a while and need to verify geometry. BTW, mine has a hole for a pin, but it doesn't reach through enough to get one in. D/L'd both for future reference for myself.
