Do you buy a lot of your sockets used? I should probably start doing that rather than buying all the new stuff because of how $$$ it can be.

I pick up any socket with a knurled base like that.

And my second set. Incomplete. Mostly C-man. When I find a good quality socket to replace a lower quality socket in my main collection, I delegate it to this collection. or if it's already in there, to the junkyard bag.

I will spend an hour going through a pawn shop loose tool bin and come out with 20-30 USA made quality sockets for $2-5.

Most pawn shops will see Snap On and sell it for retail. That's why I pick them out of the loose tool bins along with some Proto, New Britain and other old USA makes so the price goes down because they don't usually want to pick through each one to see what it is.

Wow....you really are OCD about your sockets if you keep a journal on their purchase..... :)

this is the list I keep in my wallet.

As I go through the bins, I see what sizes I need to finish my main collection, as I get them, i mark it off, then if I find one for my second collection, I use a sharpie to mark that size off.

So how much are those older sockets worth from the 30's and 40's? I didn't realize they were more valuable than any other sockets....

They really aren't worth much except to people like me. I love the history of them, and think about what they could have been used to fix.

Plus, you won't find quality like that in any new socket! They have the silent voice of experience and are ready to work again!

oh gotcha :waytogo: I would agree. It is pretty fascinating to think about "if they could talk" kinda thing. How many times have their previous owners got pissed and thrown them cuz the bolt wouldn't go in right or whatever?? :D

The only thing to watch for in the pawn shop bins are cracks. (i will pick out some even if they are cracked because they have lifetime warranties like Snap On and Craftsman.) Avoid cracked Mac and Matco/SO made Kobalt sockets, the warranty on them is a replacement socket of the Asian and Craftsman respectively, variety.

Consider my interest peaked..... :High 5:

There's guy down the street from me fixing up a Ferrari 308 GTSi. I should take a pic one of these days when it's outside :)
