I'm trying to get my choke operational again before cold weather hits, but I'm having issues. The gray solenoid? That bolts to the intake is dangling.

The screw apparently rusted off and is still in the manifold. I've tried epoxy and I've tried drilling the hole out,but neither has worked. For some reason I can't get the drill bit to penetrate the remains of the screw. Can anyone give me an idea of how to fix this?

If you were MacGyver you'd use duct tape, bubble gum and a spring from a ball point pen

Using a cheap drill bit that came with my drill. I'm going to try a better one and see if that gets me anywhere. Didn't think about the quality of the bit until my dad brought it up. I can see the duct tape and bubble gum being useful, your going to have to help me out on where I should put the pen spring lol.

Welp...maybe we're just not ready for spring engineering just yet

Yeah, get a good bit. That should be a 10-32 thread in there so you will want to start with a smaller drill than the tap drill size. I would center punch the old screw and use a 1/16" bit to start with plenty of oil. then go up to the 10-32 tap drill (5/32") size and use plenty of oil then tap it carefully stopping and backing out once and a while to blow the chips out.
Be careful! if you break a drill or the tap off your screwed.

Years back I created a manual choke bracket for a Q-jet. I will have to dig it out and take some pics.

I would do a choke conversion. Trying to remove that heat treated screw will be rough.

Yes, that's another option.

I didn't think of the heat treated part. I would say a good carbide drill bit would be needed for that if it is in fact the heat treated screw.

I'm open to the choke conversion option, if someone can point me in the right direction for a kit, or some information on how to do it. As of next week this truck will be my daily driver for a while so I'm looking to get this resolved.

You could make it a manual choke by connecting a rod to it and having a pull in your cab. There is no good electric choke option for your divorced choke carb.

Also noticed you are missing your secondary pull off rod that should be attached to your vacuum brake on passenger side front. That will cause bogging on heavy acceleration.

If you are considering changing to a different setup why not attempt to fix what you have first? I went and looked in my carb box and found my manual choke conversion bracket that I made years ago. It worked well for me but I went a different route with the truck it was on.
Heres one pic

And the second pic. I also found two Q-jets I forgot I had. BONUS!

I am holding it upside down in the first pic. The bar wih the cable clamp whent to the back of the engine and the lever arm pointed down. I was able to use the high idle cam and the pull off with this as well. It really worked good!

Im going to try everything to fix this one first, bit I will explore other options just in case. The secondary pull off rod is there, I just unhooked it and moved it out of the way to try to drill the hole out. Secondaries don't work at the moment anyway, and the vaccum line that activates the pull off rod is MIA. Ive got a whole list of carb problems right now.

Interestingly I have been running for years without the secondary rod. I ended up adjusting the tension on the spring for the secodaries tighter. Mine doesn't really bog at all when I stab the trottle and it runs out great for a stocker. I will admit I would need to study it to fully understand the theory of operation with the rod on. I wanted to be able to open the secondairies while still on partial choke so I believe thats why I removed it.
