Pos battery post smoking

It cranks slow and wont fire up unless I leave a towel over the carb. I leave the towel on the carb and as soon as it tries to fire I remove the towel and crank it and fires right up. I run it for a while turn off and try to fire it up again and it cranks slow and the positive post on battery starts to smoke. Could it be a bad ground? And why the slow crank? New battery too.

First off, don't check but, clean all ground connections.
Re-clean the battery terminals and connectors.

While the battery is disconnected remove the positive from the battery AT the solenoid and clean all of that.
After charging the battery and reassembly, try it again.

If it still cranks slow you can go the route of disconnecting the battery (again), drop the starter and remove the solenoid.
It can be 'rebuilt' by removing the BIG lug and rotating it 180 degrees. Reassemble and try again.
If it's still slow then, the starter is your likely suspect.

I'd change it out to a mini starter from the boneyard. Maybe $25.

I'd really look at that positive terminal. I'm guessing you have a side post battery? If it is smoking then my guess is that there is high resistance there from a poor connection. If it is a side post you can pry/remove the red insulation back and expose the whole side post connection. I have found that it is the best way to thoroughly clean it.

Rained here all day yesterday. So maybe be able to work on it over holiday break.

Towel? Is the choke not closed when you first go to start it?

Yeah it's closed just not all the way and the towel helps choke it and start much faster. Is there anyway to adjust it?

I wonder what kind of towel it is..does color make any difference? Thick or thin? Bath or hand? Beach towel? Was there a process of elimination to determine exactly WHICH TOWEL would claim the honors of "truck-starting towel"? Was there a Championship fight? What happens to the towels that couldn't quite pull it off? Is there a place for them to go?

Lol, you've put a lot of thought into this

I bet it has to be the right quality of towel. A cheap one will let it breathe more, while a high-end towel may choke it out.


But anyway, I agree about removing the terminal boot and giving it a good scrubbing.
