Went to look at this truck this weekend.
Seller was super responsive with a phone number….good sign.
From the phone call.
Sellers story was truck was Uncles truck since new and he bought it xx number of years ago.
Rust? Nope nothing rusted though.
Condition, just like you see in the pics. Lightly used only a few dings and scratches.
Paint? Faded but good repaint 15 years ago.
Tires? Like new…
Runs and drives great blah blah blah.

Get there guy only comes out to open his gate says go check it out in your own. Ok. Cool.
Let’s see from there, cab corners, fender corners most all have rot. Some have been bondo’d up looks like years ago by Ray Charles with cheap Autozone body filler.
Couple big dents look like they had the same guy who didn’t own a sanding block fill them with copious amounts of bondo as well. Top of bed stale pockets ripped out.
Engine cold started and ran well, until it was either sucking air from the massive gas leak at the drivers tank or was just out of gas.
Tires were like new minus the 1991 mfg date!
And literally everything else on the truck was OLD. Aside from a tune up and battery that truck hadn’t had a new part installed on it in 30 years.
Called guy (hes in the house won’t come out) said don’t want to run down your battery. Not pulling fuel now. Tried switching tanks. He says I filled one tank full last week. Can’t remember which. Keep trying.
Call him again. Hey bud, has a gas leak and idk which may have gas because they both read empty but appear to work (and I’d already switched tanks once while it was running and it kept running). He says if you’re really interested I’ll get off the couch and go get some gas…
WTF 10 min ago you said one was full.
And the guy had a dozen or more old trucks and cars some nice some like this one. He was a flipper. Looked like his specialties are replacing the carpet and posting CL adds!
Whatever. No harm no foul I suppose.
But to outright lie about the condition over the phone? Guess there’s people who wouldn’t have noticed the cake frosting bondo job or just bought it without running.

Guy was a real bag of _____. At least it was only a couple hours I wasted……

And rims were spray bombed right over the rust and dirt. Kept most of the paint off the tires lol.
Neither door latched all the way.
And there was mouse **** under the seat.

But to outright lie about the condition

Folks are aggravating. There are plenty of people out there that "paint it blue and call it new". When I sell a vehicle that I've rebuilt/refurbished/restored I usually provide the owner with as many pics of the the car while it's going through it's various stages of repair. This way they can't come back and say some BS that "You sold me a bondo buggy" or whatever else they may concoct. I regret that you couldn't cut him off at the knees and bring that K20 home with you for a bargain price.

@Grit dog in 2015 when I bought the 1996 Jeep GC we have now, I was looking for a GC that generation, and one of the ones I went to look at was in Bothell. White, fully loaded 5.2. 175K I think or something like that a bit shy of 200K anyway. Suppose to be in pristine condition, pics only show drivers side. wants $4K which is a little steep for the time. Got to look at it, passenger side has doughnut on RR looks like it's been on there for a while and this is an AWD which can sustain damage from mismatch tire size. Interior is much more worn than the pictures showed and needs a good detail. I'm thinking to myself if they'll come down a bit and the test drive goes well, maybe I'd take the risk on the transfer case. Fire it up, rod knock. Not an earth shatteringly load rod knock, but it's pretty obvious. I point that out to the owner and he says the noise has always been there and is normal for all 5.2L. I told him my background it's not normal and that I didn't want his Jeep and walked off.

The following Week I'd read an add for the Jeep we bought, 1/3 of the price and in better though with more miles.

He was only like 5’ tall and 300lbs. If I cut him off at the knees he’d really been screwed! Lol.
Nah, he wouldn’t have given it away yet. Or ever. Pretty telling that he had so many “projects” laying around.
But will keep an eye on it. Although it’s literally one of those “needs everything” trucks.
Thought about offering him $2500 on the way out but I’m not after a needs everything project. Hell, I don’t even want or need another K20. I’m after a C10. But I got a little @AyWoSch Motors goin on and thought maybe it was actually clean.
The way it sat it was just embarrassing. I can drive a vehicle with rust. I couldn’t drive one that looked like playdough hour from preschool.

Basically, yes. Cheap pink bondo evidenced where it was chipped or cracking already…
And several places it was done without removing the trim and basically puttied right onto the trim! It was comical.
One cab corner was a totally different shape than it should be so I’m guessing paper mache was actually used there!

The price alone is a red flag, unless the seller is in a desperate bind for cash.

Most of these sellers just take low quality pics from a distance, attack the frame with krylon, put an attractive price up and wait for the next sucker to stumble up.

There's plenty that'll gladly pay that price. My neighbor paid $7500 for a Frankenstein '86 C10 covered in primer and not even running. I thought he was the biggest sucker I knew, until another guy I know bought the same truck off of him for $9500 a few weeks later. The guy that bought the truck was in disbelief when I told him I paid $2500 for an '84 K1500 2 months ago. He told me that that my latest truck should easily be worth 15k. Thanks to suckers like him, it probably is if I'm patient enough selling it.

The guy said that his uncle said the motor was blown up, and it had been sitting. I poured gas in the carb, and it started right up, it even had gas in the tank to keep running. I heard the "knock", but it had 60 lbs of oil pressure. I pulled the valve cover, and put one rocker arm back on the pushrod and put a new rocker arm nut, that would stay tight, and the rest is history. I cleaned it up, and worked on it for a few hours, installed parts and tires, that I had "in stock" from other builds and now its all good.

Similar to my '81. I wasn't looking for a truck, but Mom and Pop had moved to a new place and their neighbor had this truck that he hated. I had been without a truck for a good number of years by that point, bit still didn't want to buy it. Was visiting and Pop said let's go look at the truck. The PO said it had a 454, it was clearly a small block. He had paid someone to replace a bunch of parts, he got took for a ride as most of that work hadn't been done, and I didn't see that it hadn't until I got it home. All of this is why I call my '81 a fluke. I test drove it, it rattled and banged and it didn't matter what speed you were going, it sucked. The TH400 banged into reverse like it was going to rip out the driveline, but Pop said that is normal for the 400. This was in 2012, and I looked up the info on nadaguides beforehand, and it was easily a 5k truck. Not wanting to buy it, I offered 1k expecting him to come back with 5k and we'd meet in the middle, or he'd tell me to go to hell. Later in the day he called and told me to get my truck off of his property. He truly wanted it gone. I told him I don't have 1k but we could setup a payment plan of $200 for five paydays. That gave him time to smog it, and transfer over his disabled plates and get new ones. He gave me the list of items he paid to have done to it when we signed everything into my name. I had got a ride up to Mom and Pop's, and drove that pig back home the back way because I thought it would be better.

Once I got it home, I found a laundry list of things that needed to be done, and that maybe 30% of what he paid to have done was actually done, the rest was not and he got took. After much searching, found the source of the rattling/banging, shocks were locked up and the rear frame studs were wiggling around each time the truck hit any kind of bump. Luckily the frame was still good and the holes weren't wollered out. I installed front shocks and drove it for a couple weeks without rear shocks, I don't recommend that at all...lol...very bouncy...lol...

If I ever sell it, it'll be for a reasonable price not a bloated price. Definitely more than the 1k I paid because I have improved the truck a lot. I know there are deals to be had out there, but I agree, there a lot of shady sellers that take advantage of unknowing buyers.

My K20 has been up for sale for a bit now, and I have a FOR SALE sign in the windshield with it sitting in my driveway. Had a guy knock on my front door Sunday (the 14th) genuinely seemed interested, spent the better part of 1.5 hours showing it, started it, let him poke around, even let him use my creeper to go under it. I aired out the trucks full history, skeletons and all. Guy says "I have a flight to Mexico with the wife in an hour but I'll definitely be back for this beauty, this coming weekend."

So I took him at his word, yarded out all of the parts that will be going with the truck. Guy never showed, no call/text, nothing. So now My garage floor is stacked with parts that I do not want to put back on the shelves. Truck has a full tank of premium and its still sitting here. I was even prepared to knock 2k off my asking price since I felt he was a decent buyer for it. All people are just lying sacks of crap lately. If you think I'm high on my price, say so. if something turns you off of it, say so. Don't pull this lying to my face crap.
