My son and I are rebuilding a 350 motor that is out of a 92’ pickup truck. It will be put into an 83’ K10 pickup. We are decent mechanics but neither one of us has rebuilt a motor yet. Looking for some guidance from some of you season pros out there that has done this a few times with success.

I would like to get no less than 365hp and 394 torque out of the motor on pump gas. I’m thinking about keeping the compression in the 9:1 area. My plan is so far to put factory Vortec heads 64cc with 2.02” intake valve. Low rise intake manifold. Holly 4160 carb.

Where I’m stuck at is the cam. I was going with comp cam 280 magnum 230/230 @50 /480 lift. But I don’t want the rough idle or lobe. I want a nice smooth idle. It will be a daily driver with get up and go. Can someone suggest a good cam to go with?

We haven’t put the block into the shop yet to be bored out. I’m wondering if it would be better to bore it to .30 over or go all the way to .60 to get more power out of the block?

Any advice would be welcomed. Thank you!!

I like to bore .030, leaves some meat for future rebuilds.

Heads and cam are going to give you more of a performance increase than an additional .030 of bore.

stock 350 block and bore, vortec heads with stock valves since your not chasing every last hp no point in using big valves and the cost. This is a 214/224 .442/.458 @.50 112 lsa cam through manifolds and true duals

We are not concerned with rebuilding this block again. Just want to get the most hp and torque out of it but keep it as a daily driver.

4wdkc: That cam you are pointing out. I looked on summit and didn't find it. Do you know any hp numbers with that kind of setup?

Your best bet would be to contact a cam manufacturer (personally I like Howard's Cams) and tell them all of the info, Gear ratio, tire size, compression, application. That way they can get you the right one for your application.

That 280 magnum looks to have a 110 degree lsa which would be heading towards lumpy idle (lower=lope, Higher=smooth). 112 degree lsa is what I and most others cam's are for smooth idle, good vacuum.

How far the block can be bored is more dependent on if the block can take it. Most small blocks can take 0.060 no problem, but some can't. Only way is to get the machine shop to sonic check it to verify. Some blocks have been sucessfully punched 0.080 out, but once again a case by case deal.

I'd recommend to pick up some books on how to rebuild a small block, very useful information, torque specs, casting number references, etc. https://www.amazon.com/How-Rebuild-Your-Small-block-Chevy/dp/B000X53A36 This is one that I have, put two engines back together using it and they haven't dropped the pistons on the pavement yet.

Great info, I didn't know the manufacturer would be able to point me in the direction I want to go with the setup I have.

Of course I will have the machine shop tell me what size bore the motor can take. I know that there isn't one part that is going to give me the gains i'm looking for, that's why I'm trying to find the best parts that are going to give me the most power gain without sacrificing daily driver truck. Kind of like the charger scat pack, huge power without any lope or huge fuel mileage loss. Of course the size of the engine is a big difference in that comparison, and I'm not going to get 485hp out of this 350.
I would like to get as close to 400hp as I can.

I believe I bought that book, but getting it out of my sons hands seems to be harder than one would think.
Thanks for the input.

Nice set of headers and exhaust will give ya a little hp boost too.

Planning on it, but need to narrow down the motor rebuild. I know there is a ton of factors to try and figure out, but I think I'm on the right track.
I think once I call the cam manufacturer I will well on my way to what I'm looking for.

Don't just bore it. And don't bore it .60 over unless you HAVE to.

Have 'em put a truss plate on it and have aligned bored. Have that done for the cam and crank too.
Deck the block and head just enough to true them.

Port match the heads and intake. You can do that yourself. WEAR FULL SAFETY GLASSES!

You won't be sorry.
