What are the chances of finding some original seat belts for my 84? Color and webbing condition are not an issue but the mechanism needs to work well and have no cracks or breaks in the plastic covers. I have an after market set in the truck right now but would like to have more of an original look. I believe I could find a shop that could swap the webbing and I can paint the covers.

...... but the mechanism needs to work well .....

The GM type "B" seat belt buckles never worked well. This buckle type is the self releasing on impact, (on certain conditions) that will unlatch.

GM could not possibly replace every buckle used on so many models, they just settled every court case with cash. So if you want a safe seat belt, keep what you have.

Better choice for a correct look would be the type "A" buckles that were on early squares without the shoulder strap.

Do you have pics showing the differences by chance? Their tensioners in this era weren’t worth a damn with that big button that goes through the door pillar. And I guess those door mounted seatbelts they used for like model year 1990 and never again probably had some issues, too.

No retractors on the type A belts:

You must be registered for see images attach

Edit: I should say, no self locking retractors. Extend the retractor fully and then adjust the strap on the buckle to a snug fit.
