New stater not catching

Just switched out my old starter and my new will not catch. I've had this issue before with my last square, a 81 k10 with the aftermarket starters not catching the flywheel. I did install the braket and it's on nice and snug however it will not catch. Should I go get a different starter or is a there a "proper" fix?

Did you measure the clearance between starter gear and the flywheel, and use shims to adjust it?

I did not, but come to think about it I will do that and get back with you.
