Hi, I have an 88 crew cab 350 auto. It is all original and I am looking to change the transmission to five speed. Does anyone have any suggestions for a good five speed that will match the stock 350?
2x4

Thanks!

Im not sure on a 5 speed auto... other than an earlier generation allison transmission.

Typically theres the 4L and 6L units in GM stuff ?

Agreed. Most GM truck auto transmissions were 3 or 4 speed (if they had overdrive) till they jumped straight to 6 speed. I'm sure there was a 5 speed somewhere in the mix but can't think of one off the top of my head. Any specific reason why you're dead set on 5?

I believe the "cateye" generation 6.6L duramax trucks had a 5 speed allison.... whereas the next gen 07-10 had a 6 speed allison...

Only 5 speed i know of

4l80e/4l85e Tough, low first gear, .70 over drive. use 411 or 866 stock ECM to control, or many aftermarket controllers, but $$$

The NAG1 in our old SRT is a 5 speed, but yeah there’s no GM gasser longitudinal 5 speed auto Im aware of.

OP needs to be more specific as to the request.

Yeah, not that it matters but 01-05 models were 5 speed Allison. 2006-2019 are 6 speed.

The 5-speed Allison was used behind the 8.1L HD trucks as well.

It doesnt have to be a five speed I just wanted something more efficient something with over drive but will work with the stock set up or moderately modified

700r4 (4 speed) will bolt right up, all you need is a tv cable to maintain line pressure, and lockup controller.

Or

A 4L60e/4L80e from a mid 90's truck witha independent controller.

As ****** as it is performance-wise, the 700r4 was actually quite efficient for a 4spd. The OD was so tall on the highway you can get pretty good mileage. They just have no balls around town and aren't too too tolerant of heavy abuse. It's not electronic so there's nothing funky you'll need to do to get it to work on a stock setup, just bolt it up and go. For just a driver they're halfway decent
