Hah, gotta do what you gotta do man. I approve.

Last time I brought an engine home I had to use my hitch mounted winch and a snatch block over the ladder rack to get it onto an old tire which I dragged into the garage

Structural parts of your boom has or could fail so you secured it with a chain; using the manual winch to lift the engine off the pickup bed just enough so you can drive off and lower it to a an engine stand. OR

Seeing how many replies you can get to your question?

Not seeing how many responses I could get,was seeing if anyone could figure out what was going on here. That is a cherry picker a friend gave me,said it worked I didn't really need it,but hey extra cherry picker zero dollars. Bought that engine, brought it home, figured I could lift it out with that cherry picker. Got it behind the truck, giant pita on gravel,. Surprise the ram is no good. My cherry picker is buried behind 4 long blocks a short block on a stand and 2 cars. SO I pulled the boom up put a piece of unistrut over the ram piston to keep the boom up,unhooked the one end of the come along cable from the come along body and put a hook on it. Secured the come along with a pin and vice grips, hooked the come along hook pulley to the boom and the add on hook to the motor. Crossed my fingers squinted with one eye and started cranking worked pretty darn good.

I see a street sign post welded to a cable come-along, somehow mounted to the side of an engine hoist with chain and a vise grip. I'm assuming the piston is shot maybe? This is a bad angle, if you really wanna show off your Kansas ingenuity we'll need a better shot to see it in all its glory

Great work and problem solving! Does the chain serve a purpose?

No the chain just happened to be in the pic I'll put up another pic in a minute I told my kid to take some cause nobody was going to believe this. I'm going to redo the hook setup at the end of the beam and use something besides vice grips but heck that's all the fixing the outdoor cherry pickers going to get.

I believe it, you are an awesome problem solver. Those come alongs are worth their weight in gold. I used one to move my thousand pound safe from my truck bed when it laid horizontally. I pushed the safe out of the bed carefully just until it started tipping off the tailgate and gravity lowered it slowly to the ground. It took about 15 mins to figure out how I could tip it up right without it falling to the floor. I connected a come along to the frame of the truck and the other end of the cable to the safe bottom. I either slowly winched and/or backed up the truck until the safe was upright. I was very pleased it worked perfectly, with quick on the fly problem solving.

Reminds me, Came across this gem recently on a job. Was holding up front end of this coors light can with its engine in it. I was like touching it and leaning on it checking it out till I saw this weld lol.

Did you buy that from the ACME corp because that is some serious Wile E. Coyote and the Road Runner **** going on there.

I am sure this is a slide in a safety meeting presentation when they speak about what not to do.
