Hello all,
I pulled a beautiful 1985 k10 305 5L out the field and am currently trying to get it started. I am out of ideas. I replaced the battery, plugs and wires. She turns over but wont start. The mechanical pump is pumping fuel. I am out of ideas. Does anyone have any ideas? Could a bad carburetor prevent the vehicle from starting? it seems link some sort of linkage is out on the driver side of the carb. Also there is a weird pump looking thing that seems to be rotted out. I would appreciate any help on this fellas

When I spray starting fluid into the carb, it runs for a few seconds...so I know it wants live

Obviously, the 3 basic things you need are air, spark, and fuel.
If you're getting fuel, can you verify its spraying in the barrels of the carb?
The linkage you're speaking of is vacuum modulator or whatever. I might be mistaken on that name. But it ties to the thing in front of your hand.

Since you're starting fluid is making it work, then you know you have spark to the engine.

The fact it runs on starting fluid suggests it's a fuel delivery issue.
Check the fuel filter, then if that passes, verify fuel is spraying out of the injectors in the carb.

The rusty thing you're holding in your hand looks like a choke. But I don't know.

Crummy floats in the carb can cause issues.

In general, gas that sits in a fuel system for decades does such terrible damage.
Even a period of 5 or less years. It just destroys everything and gunks it up.

I believe the first picture is a linkage for cruise control, second picture I believe is an exhaust heat riser. Get fresh gas no matter what you do. Welcome from Georgia!!

I never have understood what that diaphragm is,iI just know where it goes.

And the heat riser I would've never guessed.

Being that it runs is a great thing. I would buy a $50 carb out of the junk yard. Drain the fuel tank, change fuel filter, run some air through the fuel lines and get her running!
