I noticed someone had a gooseneck trailer hitch on the truck before. I've got the same channel welded on my 84 C20. I've since removed the hitch and that bed that had the hole in it and replaced the bed. I still have all the hitch and hardware though. My next trailer might end up being a goose neck.

Yeah I think i'm going to cut the channel out and get rid of the hitch. I just can't think of a time where I'll ever pull a trailer like that with this truck. Not to mention the countless times I wished I could lay sheets of drywall or plywood flat on the bed!

The nice thing is, you can leave the channel and the hole in the bed. Just remove the hitch and store it away in the garage or attic. You ever need it, it's a 10 minute job. You're channel is still in place and drilled, the hole in the bed is already drilled and lined up correct. You're right, I hated the damn plate and ball that stuck up. I usually had to put a landscape timber on both sides of the bed when I wanted to carry drywall or plywood to keep the ball from damaging the load, not to mention a real pain in the ass to load.

That is one good looking GMC!!
Looks straight.
A good wire feed welder and a flap disc on a 4" grinder will make quick work of those small holes. Good luck.

finally got some work done tonight, I will post some pictures of it tomorrow. Not sure if there is more holes filled or more beer bottles but we made some progress none the less.

My current dilemma.

Got all the cab holes filled.
Got a few bed holes filled.
The bed is now sanded and ready for some bed liner
the frame has been worked and is ready for POR15

I've decided to get rid of the gooseneck hole in the bed but will keep the channel on the frame cause at least it provides extra strength.

The seam sealant on the bed was old and cracked so I took a chisel and broke it all out. I will be replacing with some Norton's quick set firm seam sealer.

I feel your pain. When I got my truck it had over 40 holes to weld up. Most were on the bed rails where tool boxes once were and not to metion a roll bar at one time. You are taking all of the right steps to restoring this truck. The more time you take right now to do it right, will make you happen in the end.

Are you going to do a spray in bed liner? I'd imagine just leaving it clean, the bed liner will seal it pretty good.
