I knew the fat lady was gonna sing on a stock starter eventually but I was so money deep in the project when I rebuilt the engine I said "it'll do for now" because I didn't want to spend a couple hundred more on yet another part when I had a perfectly good new starter sitting there. I was researching and looking at new ones to replace over the winter but just haven't found the one I like yet. Also, thought she might last more than one season and 750 miles.. Lol
Me and a buddy had that problem once and new engine build. It was just a small block but it had domed pistons that we had to fly cut due to the high lift cam. 2 things, had to get new valve covers cuz the rockers were denting the stock valve covers, and after about the 3rd fire up while tuning smoked the starter. Back to Super Shops for a hi torque starter. :happy175: It was about a 11.5-1 engine, of course some of that bled off with that biggo cam, .525 lift and 310 duration.

I wouldn't give a lot for that boat anchor but it ain't my money.

If you are going to get the smaller (new) style, you HAVE to get the bolts with it. They are shorter than the boat anchor ones.

Ive got the bolts. Is this the smaller version? Is it more torque then my 78 boat anchor?

That's not the correct starter for a '98, that's a regular ol big one.

There were slightly smaller sizes used starting in the 80's, but yeah, that one was not put on that '98 by GM.

I think on the first page is where I put up a picture. The small body starter has the long thru-bolts that hold it together.

If you got the bolts for it too it should go right in with no problems.

Just clean all of the electrical connections before you mount it and you shouldn't have to worry about it for a long while.
