When I pull on the lever to switch it's just a soft pull until it runs out of stroke. No click, no light change, no nothing. Do I need to adjust the switch that's down at the bottom of the column, or is this something broken inside the column?

To find out what is wrong just remove the two lower column covers:

You'll be able to see the dimmer switch on the left side of the column:

Work the directional stalk as if changing from highs to lows and observe the action of the rod.

If it moves up/down but you get no resistance...the switch is probably shot. You can try adjusting it closer, but if the mounting fasteners are not loose it probably hasn't moved.

NOTE: If you do loosen those fasteners, be aware that they also secure the ignition switch in it's proper position. Be sure to mark the position of the ignition switch before loosening anything.

As a final test to confirm a bad switch, try grabbing the rod with a pair of vise-grips and stroking it further down. See if that gets the switch to click. If it does, go ahead and try to adjust it closer to the rod.

On the other hand, if the rod does not stroke when the stalk is toggled, that would indicate something is broken at the MFS stalk end. Most likely the little lever arm - that acts on the end of the switch actuating rod when the stalk is pulled upward:
