Has anyone done an 88-91 TBI swap into their 79-86 square? (2WD)

I have a chance to buy an '88 2WD and wondered if anyone had swapped this motor and tranny into an 85 square? Were the results positive for reliability/ease of installation/end result? Thanks-

Hi and welcome from DE. Plenty of threads on here about swapping everything into anything.

I'm going to be swapping a 93 350 TBI into my 84 C10 this Christmas break. I already have the 350 TBI engine. I bought a TBI stand alone harness and computer from PFIS, an 87 FI tank and Precision A25007 in tank fuel pump with inline filter (Wix 33481), Fragola AN6 fittings and fuel injection hose, and several other parts that I believe I will need. I'm going to use the Vortec style serpentine system with a 140 amp alternator (with alt adapter fitting). I've been buying parts for the last few months and hope to do this swap in less than 9 days. I hope this won't be too difficult. I will be asking tons of questions as I get started and will follow this thread and learn somethings as I go.

If you've get a whole 88 this is duck soup, every thing you need is in the 88 except the gas tank which you don't have to swap.Use a ford f250 in line pump and done. The motor and trans go in bolt for bolt and you can scavenge the ecm and wiring harness from the 88 split the loom open, peel out what you need for the tbi.

It's been done a lot, and not just into squares. But the first thing that comes to mind here is that @foamypirate swapped a TBI engine and trans into an '84. Well, I think it was an '84. It was gold.

of course anyone has done this , alot yes....
a donor truck is the best, and fuel tank fuel pump swap to a '87 91 style is your best way too, as 87 ujp tanks are different form 81-86 and 73-80 tanks, and also you will need to do whole dash and motor harnesses swap also. i have a clean perfect TBI dash harness sitting here i will never use that needs a good home, i will never swap to a tbi motor no way.. i love carb motors.. way more.. they just sound and run better than tbi. whole different world.
if you dont know how to diagnose TBI fuel injection injector and ignition systems etc then i wouldnt suggest swapping to a tbi motor. because eventually youre gonna need to diagnose a failure issue of some kind with it.
