I'm pretty sure it was gas. The only problem I could see would be the distributor but hey if I had a snorkel and big enough balls I would try it. Especially in a disaster situation if it was my only option!
Yes all four trucks used were gas. As for the lava it was a SF mixture and coating.

The river was the Coeur d' Alene river in NW Idaho. The town used as the fictional Dante's Peak was Wallace, Idaho and some shots were up near Kellogg, ID. The river has a very rocky bottom and banks.
