Thanks all for a great site. I was looking to update my 87 GMC beater work truck with a later model but you all have convinced me to keep it.
Over the years I have owned several square body trucks. I used to fly out of a regional airport often and a bright yellow GMC 2500 with a big #34 on the side always caught my eye when it was out on the runway doing maintenance. About 5 years ago I saw it up for a government auction and was able to pick it up.
I have not done much to it since then other than put on later model wheels, a southern rust free box, and repainted it gray to closer match a couple late model Sierras that are also in my fleet. As a municipal used truck for most of its life it was suprising how very well maintained it has been and never hacked up. It has 60K original miles, original 350 TBI, 400 trans, original exhaust, and working R12 A/C.
Whats next? I don't know for sure and open for suggestions. It definitely needs overdrive and I will likely tackle some interior upgrades. I have also been reading through the diesel conversion forums quite a bit. Cummings, blah, blah, Cummings.......blah, blah. How about something different? Like a John Deere 4045 or 6068 with Allision 6 speed perhaps? I don't need lots of pulling power- have a Duramax for that job. Just need something to push a little snow and go to the beer store at a comfortable pace once in awhile.
