I may get laughed at for this lol.
Its a rubber pad to help older people get grip to opean jars turns out its great for oil filters too.

I usually beat a screwdriver through it.. I mean its getting replaced anyways haha.

Once I started buying turbo vehicles I found with the hotter oil temps oil filters would sometimes get very stuck. I bought a Craftsman oil filter wrench and it works great. The 3 arms have gears in them so the more you twist it the more they crush down (grip) the filter. And since it is still like a large socket I can still use an extension to reach up in hard to reach places.

I've never seen that design before, but that looks to be a very effective method for some very stubborn filters without making a huge mess. :waytogo:

My ex Son in Law, of course he's a stupid ****, worked with on his newly acquired car for over 2 hours before he called me. I went over there with my biggo channelocks and had it off in 20 seconds after he tried the whole screwdriver trick and all.

That Craftsman filter wrench is pretty cool. I might have to nab one of those if I ever make it into a Sears again.

I like that craftsman filter wrench too. I have some old school filter wrenches for stubborn ones, but I usually use the shelf non-slide stuff that I cut to act as a grabber similar to rubber jar grabber idea. I made it into a strip of 2 inches by about 7 inches, just enough get around the filter.

Besides the first oil change of cars I bought, the only car I have ever had a really difficult time with was my ex girlfriend's 95 Buick Regal with a 3800 v-6. The filter was way up there and you need extra joints in your arm to get a good grip in the confined space. Even with not overtightening it, by the next oil change that stinking filter was melted to the block again. And that was with cleaning the mounting surface and putting a film of fresh oil on the gasket.

Nope, cuz by the time I get to the vehicle, who knows who put it on or where they had it changed at. I usually just go hand tight and then 1/4 turn. I used to do just hand tight til one time I did an oil change and some other work on a 80's Pontiac Formula Bird. Took it for a test drive, and it was a GOOD test drive. When I got back I noticed a puddle under it. The oil filter had spun loose a little. Now the hell that happened I had no clue, but I put it back on hand tight, went 1/2 tun past that time and added back in the quart it lost on the test drive. Ever since then, I've always added the 1/4 turn. Some asshats also don't lube the seal and that's part of the reason too they can be stubborn.

I recently had my first experience of stuck oil filter. Tried my oil filter end cap that you hook a ratchet to and that broke. Went to get some of those rubber wrenches where you pull and they tighter, still wouldnt budge. I realized at that point I had spend almost two hours trying to get the damn filter off and I went to O'reillys and got me a pair of these:
