Hey guys,

I have an interesting engine build with random question that the experts may know. So let me spill the beans on my project. I have a 85' 350 4 bolt main block. Just sent it to the machinist, and they bored it .060 over. Here is where it gets interesting. I've been curious if the 400 crank with 5.7'' rods and .060 over pistons in this 350 block will make it a 413 c.i. block? Being i'm going for small block engine with big block cubes will this work? The rotating assembly is a 413 kit from Eagle Performance with the hyperuetic pistons, steel forged crank and 5.7 rods. the Combo i'm looking to run is the Edebrock total performance package 420 HP kit and 650 CFM carb, edelbrock hardened push rods and scorpion 1.6'' roller rockers with stud girdles. If the rotating assembly fits and does not hit the block or cam lobes, will this kit work? I know it's alot of parts to accompany each other to spec in but, i'm lost in the sauce when it comes to this kit matching up to the block/bore and stroke plus head gasket size and keeping it under 10:1 ratio for 91 pump gas... any help is greatly appreciated. Below is the links for the ratating assembly and Edelbrock kit.

413 Rotating Assembly - 9.6:1 / 76cc are the 2098 package edelbrock heads.

Hopefully these packages will keep the HP's above 420HP, but idk know if they'll mock up with the large bore.

Engine being built for mud truck with a th400, 3000 stall converter and 14 bolt full float 4.10 rearend.

Thank you for your time and knowledge,

Blaine

There is a problem according to the link you provided concerning the rotating assembly. That assembly is using a 400 block and you have a 350 block. I am going to go out on a limb but, ahh,NO that will not work.:sorry:

The 400 block is a very different animal than the 350 block. :)

BTW- I am not an expert but I have had a built 400 and a built 350. Two very different engines..

That's why I shouldn't listen to crazy people they said the blocks are the same between 350 and the 400. Guess I'll go the [email protected] over then. I know that'll work fine with the kit. Thanks for the reply though.

Make sure to get a really good aluminum rad as 60 over can cause some over heating issues. Via not enough heat transfer

Good deal bud better safe then sorry. Don't use a high flow water pump as flow isn't a issue. A good all new pump will do. Take pics of that mud fun!

That crank kit won't work at all in a 350 block. Besides pistons being the wrong size, the 400 block uses larger mains.

Also, don't go .060 over unless the block needs it. Those 5 extra cubes won't do anything other than eliminate the chance of rebuilding that block again.

And finally, if you want big-block power, get a big block IMHO.

I had to go up to .060 over since the bore when I brought it to the machinist was .030 over. I asked for .040 but they said they can only go .060. So I took the hit. I'm looking at a 400 crank that has manufactured jurnals for the 350 block. Here's a parts list that is just brain thoughts so please put your opinions.

Summary for 388 build - parts looked up from Jegs

388 stroker external or internally balanced whichever jegs carries in stock -(just need 2 piece rear seal for my 4 bolt main) #356-B13404L06053, 64cc @ 9.9:1for heads CR ,5.7 rods / stroke 3.750 / -12cc flat top, standard ring gap

Cam- COMP cam #249-12-213-3
/.501" intake and exhaust / duration 292-degrees LSA 110 degrees / rpm range 2500-6500 w/ 3000 stall converter & 9.9:1 CR with 1.6 roller rockers

Timing chain - COMP CAMS 2100 double roller timing chain 4- degree adjustments

1 1/2" main tube headers-3" collectors

Speed master PCE147.1023K high rise intake

Heads- edelbrock - 60899 64cc chambers max lift - .575 / valves are 2.020"/1.600" / 185cc intake ports / hyd. Flat tappet springs 3/8 studs

Edelbrock 750 carb # 1407 - manual choke non- egr / ( electric choke # (if needed) #350-1478)

Truck is a 81' step side K10 (3/4 ton conversion) 4" lift, 35" tires, np208 / th400 -3,000 stall converter / 8 bolt 3/4 ton 4:10 axles- use will be mud truck (looking for 450 hp) budget is $1900 for everything that's not the rotating assembly. I'm @ $1400 right now so I have wiggle room.

Thanks guys!

With that cam I'd step up the size of the primaries on those headers. The rpm range of that cam paired with those heads and rest of stuff will want to scream at higher revs. I'd go no lower then 1-5/8 primaries but if funds are available I'd try to find a set of 1-3/4 and let that bad boy really scream its way through the pits:party36:

Yeah I'll go ahead and grab the 1 3/4 ones i thought I was going too small. I'll just put the 1 1/2s on my 00' escalade 5.7. Stripping the emissions anyways!

I got my kit out of northern auto when i built my 383. They made two different kits depending on they rods you wanted to use. I got the kit that used the 5.7 rods for my 350
the other kit came with 6.0 rods if i remember correctly its been a couple years. plan on new harmonic balancer a flywheel because 400s are externaly balanced and 350s are internal. The carb you plan on using is a big POS there not big enough 750cfm or larger

chevyman82,

Yeah that carb turned out to be the biggest turd I've ever touched! It was the worst case of off idle bog I've ever experienced. I sold it for $250 and bought and rebuilt myself an $80 classic street (non-double pumper) Holley 650 which was perfect for the truck. I opted for a summit pair of heads with a max lift of 0.525 so I ran a SUM-1105 cam with 224/234 duration @ 0.466/0.486 lift. @ 114 LSA. Truck runs good with power brakes! Needless to say the truck could use some ladder bars now, so that's my next project. If the power is still not enough for me one day, I'll spray it until it blows and then drop a Blue Print 498 Chevy in it and leave her alone. One day I might get over my hotrod bug, well, at least my wife thinks so but I'm going to keep this truck rolling with the tires smokin' for as long as I can.
