I've done engine/trans/t-case pullouts many many times in the past. As long as you've got enough room to get the angle of the dangle right, it's the way to go.
It's plenty strong enough to handle it. There's many GM medium duty trucks that have frame mounts on the bellhousing adapter, then the trans hangs off of that with no rear mount at all. It's actually far more likely that a hoist attachment point will fail.
I'm just sayin' that I wouldn't trust the weight of the tranny and x-fer case hanging off the back of the motor. That's just me.
