Drum brakes on a 1979 Big 10?

And you arent compromising brake ability when in regards to stopping often or hard - fade. drum brakes work fine but they are inefficient at cooling. if not for adjustments/cooling, they would likely still be used in fronts on passenger cars.

I am thinking he wants the drums so he can back the shoes off the drums just enough to not drag.
He is doing the old school drag tricks with drum brakes.

Thanks for the information! If I can't get the rims to clear the calipers thats what I will do.

it seems to me they used a 6 bolt pattern not 5 .

Maybe he wants that fractional advantage of less friction?

I googled, it sounds like drum brakes in front can hold the truck at the line and then release fully with adjustment so it don't drag so he can get a little more?

You are right!!! That part escaped my mind.He doesn't just want to go drum, he wants 5 bolt drum. IDK if any other hubs would fit those spindles If some other hub would fit the drum could be redrilled.I know it won't be pretty but the drum would be trapped between the hub and the wheel and just using 3 or 4 lugs with goid meat as dowell's to keep it located.
