Did you pull the tilt spring out?

I think that is the guide for the tilt spring.

Item 32 in the pic.

It could be i guess ... I did have the spring out so i guess your saying it goes behined the spring.. This has been a royal pain . I tore into this thing thinking i had a cracked ignition rac but it looked fine. I replaced the rack and 'paper clip thingy' that holds the sector gear. I couldnt remove the sector gear. All of this work is for i think my key everso slightly likes to shut off the truck while driving

I can’t seem to quite get the tilt spring to go in fully with the pin inserted.

It goes under the spring, the cup on the flared end rides on a nub down in the tilt spring hole.

It’s the little nub just above the top right bolt in this picture.

Yeah those cups are pretty soft, mine ended up with big cuts on the corners of the little square hole from using a big tapered blade screwdriver

At least it’s back together.

I notice a fair bit of free movement of play between these two sector gear positions what can I do to shore up more towards the run position. That bit of play causes the ignition switch to lose contact with”run” while driving

It’s hard to see in the pic but it’s enough sector gear play to cause it to shut off. I probably won’t use grease I believe the odd looking spring that attaches to sector gear is too overpowered

You might have to adjust the "ignition switch" at the bottom of the column. I don't think your problem is in the lock/tumblers.

I agree.

The lock plunger spring shouldn't be strong enough to overcome the ignition switch. Your issue is probably in the Ignition switch adjustment.

Besides, the spring should only be under tension when the key is turned to the "Lock" position.

Disconnect the wires from the switch, loosen the bolts on the switch, have someone turn the key to the "Start" position while you slide the switch up and tighten it down. Add good tension to the spring in the Ignition Switch but not totally bottomed out.

When set right you should be able to turn the key to Start, it should snap back to run when you let up, you should be able to feel every position of the switch as you turn the key through its cycle.

Going back and reading your posts Amy best guesses are:
Ignition switch needs adjustment
worn out Ignition switch,
Or
How many keys are on your key ring?
Funny story - I ask because we had a car come into the shop when I was a kid for randomly dieing. No one could in the shop could replicate the problem. The third time she brought it to us for the same problem we had the owner take our mechanic for a ride, she hit a bump & the car died. After checking several things he reached over to turn the key and realized her keyring was huge, when she hit a bump the weight of the key ring was turning the key out of the Run position. She only ever left us the spare key when she left the car so thats why none of us could get the car to die when we drove it.
