Hi, installing a Dakota digital in my 87 GMC. Trying to figure out wiring, Ive seen different diagrams and some have same color wire going to different component. Such as the tan/white wire, one diagram has it going to fuel sender, another diagram has it going to brake. Anyone already been through this or is it just me? Looking for correct wiring for 87, thanks everyone

Did it on my 85. Use a test light. Unplug the connector to the cluster and probe each pin as you turn on/off each component.

Don't know about 87 but my 85 pink is fuel and I think tan was brake.
Test light and ohm meter would be the best way to check.

AGain, this is my 85's plug. You can see pin 18 here and it is not tan as described in the above wiring.

Look at the printed circuit on the back of your factory gauge cluster, trace back the gas gauge circuit to where hey go on the harness.

I cant upload pictures at the moment but looked at my pictures from breaking down my 1980 cab harness & my instrument cluster plug is the same as yours. In my picture I have the pink wire at position 18 labeled as "GAS," and the Tan Wire at 17 labeled as "BRAKE." I used the printed circuit and tracing wires back to the bulkhead, dimmer switch and headlamp switch to identify all of the functions for mine.

You could plug a long jumper wire into that spot and use a multi meter to test it at the connector from the sending unit for continuity.
